Tata Motors to bring Truck Racing to India Edit: Now launched

Tata Motors is planning to bring truck racing to India. Yes you heard it right. Though there is no official confirmation from Tata Motors, it is confirmed by Mr. Vicky Chandhok, President -Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI). He has got access to the program ahead of it's official announcement.

The first season has been planned for March-2014 at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC).

Would like to hear reactions of fellow members.

Is the track built for heavy vehicles like that ? I hope they do not spoil the track by letting it out for any event just to generate revenue.

There is a category in 2014 Desert Storm called Ndure+ which is meant for trucks. Not sure if there any participants though.

Wow, this was something I never dreamed of. Indian Trucks racing on BIC? God, I wish I was hallucinating.

Those race tracks are not built for trucks, I suppose but for money, we can do pretty much anything. However what I fail to understand, what is the use of truck racing? Would people even watch it? And what do companies gain out of it? Its not as if the 'customers' in the country are queuing up to buy trucks.

Someone please help me understand the logic behind this.

Truck racing is already there in India. Go to Gurgaon Faridabad road or Palwal- Sohna road or the likes you will cling ti your life after watching empty dumpers racing with each other.

Jokes apart, the objective of the racing is not clear. What is the gain out of organising such event?

This is amazing news! I love when I see heavy tractors slide spitting smoke and steam aiming for apex

The T1 league has been on works for a while. The first set of Prima Race prepared trucks are ready in UK and will be here by Jan 2014.

Two venue are planned. BIC and Chennai. Side events will be Nano Racing, Super Ace racing, etc. Expect some international classic Rock performers also.

Racing be it car or truck, is primarily meant for sport, entertainment and of course technology demonstration. Well I'm not aware of motive behind the truck race @BIC in context here, but should be similar to any other races - demonstrate and prove the new technologies. Yes, the ultimate motive is obviously to make gains by commercializing whatever they can!

What? So they will transport all those trucks to India from UK?

There are three very basic things that I can think of that a potential truck buyer would evaluate - Durability, load carrying ability, low maintenance. None of these three is demonstrated by a truck race. If anything, it will only induce a truck driver who would watch this and then try it on the highway, endangering even more lives than he does already.

I would think this racing would not be for the average truck driver, since the trucks you would see in the race would not be the average one's.

This exercise in my view is meant for publicity as well as creating some excitement among junta for trucks in general.

Truck racing is a form of Motorsport. Has very limited correlation to Load hauling ability of the trucks concerned. These trucks are special purpose machines and not commercial variants of the trucks they share their frontal looks with.

Here's a picture to set the tone, to understand what this means.

Totally agree with 1100D. Truck racing is something which occurs in Europe and has a very small viewership around the world compared to other auto races.

I really do not think this will materalize in India for this very season. F1 being such a famous and watched motorsport is in doubt about India for what ever reasons, then comes Euro truck racers.

If they do, I am going for sure since they are something else to watch. I remember hiring a video casette which had a compilation of truck racing when I was a kid since the coverage on TV was very low .

I was trying to imagine TATAs and AL's and Eicher's racing at Buddh.

Friends, Tata Motors is yet to make official announcement about the proposed truck racing events. So we can wait for further details about the configuration of the trucks, race formats etc.

re: Tata Motors to bring Truck Racing to India Edit: Now launched

I guess it is ok to give out some more details

-12 Prima Trucks will be in starting line with upto 6 teams
-Trucks are prepared as per BTRA norms.
-Side events could be souped up Nano/Indica/Tata Xenon/Tata 407 racing
-Spectators could be given an opportunity to try their hands.
-Opening and closing concerts by an international act
-First fixture will be a 2 day event in March '14 at BIC. Second could be at MMSC in Oct '14

I was told that the Turbo sound of the modified PRIMA engines could shake the soul of a ghost. And yes there will be pit girls
