From Feb 20th this month, Government will enforce the mandated requirement of having GPS devices installed in Public Transport vehicles including autos, taxis and buses running in major cities with a population of over 10 lakh.
The deadline for this implementation was Sep 30, 2013.

According to a ministry of road transport and highways circular, owners of public service vehicles are required to get GPS ( Global Positioning System) installed in their vehicles by February 20, 2014 failing which necessary action as deemed fit shall be taken against the defaulters.
This project is part of the Nirbhaya Fund for women safety.

Hopefully, the public vehicles owners knew this for some time They come up with new plans without giving much time and make sure the necessary equipment is available.

As I understand, all vehicles will have CCTV and also record their complete tracks using GPS. Not sure how this will help if the recording is local to the vehicle and can be trampled with.

Is this the same requirement mandated four years ago and yet to get implemented ?

New deadline is 1st April, 2018, with panic button also added along with GPS.

All taxis, buses and public transport vehicles, barring three-wheelers and e-rickshaws, will have to install location tracking device or GPS and an alert button from April 1. The road transport ministry has reiterated the deadline amid reports that most of the states had not done much to meet the target.

When any passenger presses the alert button, both the transport department and police control rooms will be alerted for taking quick action.
