Are you sure they weren't being unloaded? AFAIK, Ford manufactures the Figo hatchback and Aspire compact sedan (which are pictured) in their Sanand plant in Gujarat, and not in their Maraimalai Nagar (Chennai) plant. They manufacture only the EcoSport and Endeavour in Chennai.

Given Arakkonam is a major rail hub in the south, its possible they've transported these cars via rail, and are then further distributing it in the southern states via container trucks.

Maruti Suzuki cars on trains! Indian Railways ties up with automobile giant for transporting consignment.

In a first such initiative, the Western Railway has joined hands with automobile giant Maruti Suzuki India Ltd to transport its cars by train from its plant in Gujarat to other parts of India

The first such train (rake) loaded with 125 Maruti-Suzuki cars in 25 NMG coaches left the Maruti plant in Detroj to Nidvanda in Bengaluru Division of South-Western Railway, a distance of 1m716 km.

The entire consignment of cars was loaded in less than four hours

Rate revision for transport of vehicles via railways could make auto manufacturers look at alternate means of transport.
