Tata Motors completes 60 years of truck building at Jamshedpur

Tata Motors has completed sixty years of truck building at its Jamshedpur manufacturing and engineering facility. The factory, which was set up in 1945 started with manufacturing of steam locomotives. It shifted its focus to trucks in 1954. Since then, it has rolled out more than two million commercial vehicles.

The Jamshedpur facility is spread over 603 acres with manufacturing, engineering and support services. It assembles more than 200 medium and heavy commercial vehicle models and rolls out one every 5 minutes. The plant also houses engineering centres to conduct truck testing for operability in various climatic conditions and varied surfaces, including dense urban centres, all of which operate under distinct set of rules and regulations, governing commercial vehicles operations. The plant's engineering research centre is capable of carrying out vehicle design and integration and development of electronic control systems, pneumatic systems, cabins, multi-axle trucks, tractor-trailers and tippers and special application vehicles (like mixers and tankers), for both civilian and defence customers.

The engine assembly shop at the plant is capable of supplying up to 300 engines per day. The facility is capable of manufacturing trucks compliant with Euro VI or BS VI emission standards. The plant also conducts driver training programs.

Additionally, Tata Motors has a township spread over 1,250 acres, with residential quarters, hospitals and schools.

Thanks for that valuable news Aditya. As usual you are the one to bring the important milestones around the auto world to notice. Congratulations to TML and best wishes for further growth & innovation.

The one in the picture looks like the LPK 2516c tipper. One of the prevalent new age TML cab designs.

Re: Tata Motors completes 60 years of truck building at Jamshedpur

What the Tata's achieved in building the plants at Pune and Jamsedpur for manufacturing trucks in the 1950s and 1960s is all the more incredible considering this was achieved in the days of the license raj and its associated obstructive bureaucracy, the Mahalanobis model of stifling large private enterprise and India's acute shortage of foreign exchange. The obstructive bureaucracy sadly continues even today albeit a little better than in the 60s and 70s and 80s.
