Looks like another photo from Malta, during the ferry flight.
What’s with the smoke? Is that from an engine start? Did they still use these sort of cartridges that blow a lot of air into the turbine?

Thanks

Explosive cartridge starters. Was common style in the 1950s and 60s for several aircraft including C-130, English Electric Canberra and others.

Thanks, thought so. Always quite the spectacular way to get going! I might be wrong but I think even the early versions of the mighty B52 used this. Or had it as a back up perhaps?

Yes you are correct. It was a reliable independent way to get started without ground equipment. And here you see it on video on the only fly worthy Seahawk still around (in the UK)

The man responsible for the strategy and deception of the Eastern Seaboard partially described in post #38 was Vice Admiral Nilakantan Krishnan (1919-1982). He was of course very intelligent and he was a risk taker. He served in World War II and was awarded the DSC (Distinguished Service Cross). He wrote a book 'A Sailor Remembers'. I met him once as a teenager and got completely tongue tied and overawed.
Good to see my Grand Uncle here if my dad (35 years of sailing, considers the vice admiral his mentor as also his uncle) starts off with his stories, I make a run for it

wonderful article and writing sir. God knows our armed forces deserve far more support, hardware, and recognition in these difficult times.
