Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

MP tourism is big on Caravan tourism. I had met the MP tourism secretary. Presently they are promoting this and are inviting private investors for the same. Their infrastructure is very good im told.

Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

I think i am going to be bashed for this!!

But I cannot resist myself. In topgear style, caravans are a mess to other road users. Especially in India, we already have a very good road sense and road culture, and now these huge monsters being towed. No please!

Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

MP tourism is probably the only one which came up with Caravan tourism, and its gonna utilize MP Tourism Hotels as parking bays and to support these(call it water, lighting, security etc)

But going with MP tourism is not flexible enough(limited options)

I've recently read somewhere in the dailies that AP Tourism and Rajasthan Tourism are planning to start promoting Caravan tourism but not sure when.

There is a great deal of support infrastructure required to bring Caravan tourism into limelight, state boards of tourism can afford but its a long way before we see any private development in this segment.

I'm a big fan of Caravanning but am waiting to have support stuff to be in place..probably it could take at least 5yrs from now

Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

We don't have the infrastructure to be able to use caravans/camper vans in India. Countries like Australia/UK/US have dedicated caravan sites where you can park your caravan and in plug into electricity/gas/plumbing etc.
In India there are not even many proper camp sites leave alone caravan parks. You cannot just park off the road for the night since it would be asking for trouble. The only place which comes to mind is along the beaches in Goa.

There is however a brilliant option for converting your standard hatcback/SUV/MUV for camping. Check this site: swissRoomBox-monospace

Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

I personally would NOT venture and camp in a caravan for the below reasons.
  • Secluded tourist spots are not safe.
  • Dependability of the camper.
  • Need to fill Water and other use-ables periodically
  • Need to cook food
  • Unfriendly policing policy
  • Parking is prohibited along most tourist points.
  • Emergencies might be difficult to handle
  • "High Partying" not allowed at tourist points
Why they have failed is because of the following points
  1. Hotels available in every tourist destination (Lodge at-least)
  2. No need to worry about food and emergencies in a hotel
  3. Security in a hotel
  4. No issues with Parking (most hotels offer hassle free in-compound parking).
  5. Road quality is increasing day by day, acting a motivation to drive.
  6. Drive - visit the spot - retire for the day at a hotel - drive back is more-convenient than camping for the night.
  7. Hotels are convenient for people who prefer to have a "soft-drink" party.
  8. Sedans / SUVs handle better than a caravan.
  9. Maneuverability of Sedans and SUVs compared to Caravans.

Re: Caravans - Why not in India ?

Are there any regulations like size, configuration and registration formalities for towing a caravan on Indian roads using my personal car or Jeep?

It's been many years now since I built mine; companies have gone and new ones sprung up.
There used to be several firms in Bombay [which was what the city was called at the time] who built them, mainly for the film industry to use on location.
I'm sure you can find a bus / coach building shop who is capable, but figure out what you want first, then do your own research.

Do you want to cook on board?
Shower?
Toilet?
AC unit independent of the main engine [generator?]
TV / computer [power requirements]?
Batteries are heavy and expensive, also they only last a few years. Use deep cycle or UPS batteries for the 'house'

My experience is that those shops can produce good looking things but they aren't very good with the technical parts. If you know what you want, someone there can make it for you.
