Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania, has displayed an ethanol engine and an ethanol-powered Green Bus at the ongoing Busworld 2015 exhibition. The Scania Ethanol city bus is running on bioethanol, a renewable fuel, which is claimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 90%.



The DC9 ethanol engine, which powers the bus, has 5 cylinders and a displacement of 8.9-litres. It produces 266 BHP and 1,200 Nm of torque and complies with Euro V emission norms. The engine measures 1,540 mm in length, 860 mm in width and 1,460 mm in height and weighs 882 kg. It is mated to a ZF 9-speed automatic gearbox.



The bus has seating capacity of 35 and 1 wheelchair position. It is equipped with features such as air-conditioning, radio, CD, TV screens in the front and middle, disc brakes and a reversing camera among others.



The company also showcased its premium range of the Metrolink 13.7 m coach at the show. These coaches are equipped with safety features such as Fleet Management System (FMS), speed limit compliant to state regulations, six emergency exits with twelve hammers, emergency doors, 100% fire retardant bus body, and Blended Retarder. Metrolink Coaches were delivered to companies such as Kaushik Logistics (Kolkata) who will ply, service and manage the buses for UPSRTC, Hebron Transports (Chennai) and Transit Logistics (Telangana).

Scania is planning to increase the level of localisation in its products. It has recently inaugurated a bus plant in Narsapura. At present, Scania has a capacity of 2,500 trucks and 1,000 buses. Over the next 5 years it plans to sell 5,000 trucks and 2,500 buses in the Indian market.

However the show stopper was Mammoth a Luxury coach built by MG Alma on Man 16.22 FE Chassis. This will be a Joint attempt and will sold through Man dealers.
