London Mayor wants to ban trucks with huge blind spots by 2020

Mostly based on fatalities from such trucks hitting cyclists that are in its blind spots.

On a scale of 0 to 6 London will refuse to work with contractors who deploy zero star / minimum visibility trucks.

If we were to implement the same rule here, the roads would be mostly empty. Trucks, especially older models and plying on city roads, have no mirrors, not even cleaners looking out of the window, to check if there are any vehicles immediately in the front or to the left of the truck's cabin.

It would probably kill the economy but god, what a pleasure it would be to have no trucks, office cab traveller vans etc on the roads if they didn't comply to a set of rules.

And if a truck of such modern design has such extensive blind spots - I shudder to think what sort of blind spots world war 2 to 60s design tata and ashok leyland lorries will have.

Why limit it to just trucks? In Delhi I see 50% people driving cars with the ORVM conveniently folded in, they are simply driving looking in the front only!

When asked they cite the reason of Bikers hitting/destroying them, which leaves me wondering - the purpose of saving them, when they will not be used anyway.

Every vehicle has a blind spot. I wonder if they will ban them all next.

Every vehicle has blind spots.
Even something as small as bikes have blindspots where objects at a wider angle from the bike cannot be seen in the rear view mirrors. Wondering if they will ban them all too!
Looks like London too now has a NGT of their own to take no brainier decisions!

The key seems to be excessive blind spots. They claim to have a scale of 0 to 5 ranking trucks on their amount of blind spots, and propose to ban only 0 rated trucks.

Now depends on who put these ratings together and how accurate they are.

re: London Mayor wants to ban trucks with huge blind spots by 2020

The article’s title is a bit misleading. London is not going to ban trucks with huge blind spots. London, is proposing.

Quote:
Beginning next year, the city government will not work with contractors who use “zero-star” vehicles,
So this will only apply for trucks that are working for or on behalf of the London Council.

It does make you wonder how they are going to administer this rule? Is London Council going to set up a database that comply. Who will do the verification? Personally, I do think it is a good idea, although I have some concerns on the practicalities. Also, I don’t think you should measure these sort of things on a six point scale.

Either it’s good enough or it isn’t.

But remarkably, in Europe (EU) we have actual legislation in place governing this:

http://brigade-electronics.com/R46

Maybe the Brits should remain in the EU so they don’t have to think up these things themselves? Truth is, just with the EU directive, the problem is with the implementation and execution, not coming up with the idea and legislation.

If a cyclist hits a pedestrian or another cyclist because of blind spots, he or she is likely to come out alive from the accident, not to mention the other party would most likely survive.

The probability of the cyclist making out alive or in one piece reduces drastically when it is a multi ton metal behemoth that hits you.

Even with them open, people still drive -- follow the nose...! It is so apparent when they cut in lanes, and try to merge where they deem wish.
