The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Tesla will unveil an electric semi-truck in September this year. This information was revealed through a tweet by the company's CEO, Elon Musk. Deeper details about the features, range and powertrain specifications of this Tesla semi haven't been revealed yet.

Elon Musk had first mentioned about the company's plans to develop commercial vehicles in July last year, when he drafted the company's 'Master Plan'. Musk had said that the Tesla semi would be engineered to reduce the cost of cargo transportation, while making it safer and easier for drivers to drive such heavy vehicles for long distances.

The semi-truck is also a part of Elon Musk's plans to expand Tesla's reach beyond the passenger vehicle segment. This will not only help the electric car maker to gather experience of developing electric powertrains for completely different roles and capabilities, but will also insulate it from changing market equations of a single segment.

Wow. that is really good news. (Bad for some OEMs who survive on Trucks). Very interesting to see the product development cycle followed by Tesla. Hope they deliver an amazing product free off niggles (unlike Model S).

re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Turnaround time is crucial for Trucks. max on-road time is super critical for ROI. Also, Charger/Super Charger location cannot be decision makers for route planning.
Keeping these in mind, I really hope Tesla is able to provide Battery Hot Swap technology.

Also, in many cases, these trucks return without trailer. In this case, the tractor (Truck without trailer) should not have the penalty of the huge battery pack otherwise needed for a full load pull. Therefore, a twin battery pack approach - one for tractor and other for trailer, would be ideal. Improves traction too.

This news is sure to send a lot of truck manufacturers scrambling for their cheque books and putting together electric propulsion teams!! They have already seen what Tesla did to the passenger car manufacturers.

But wouldn't the weight penalty of a big battery be much less for a semi than for a car. I mean they should be able to put a much bigger battery compared to the weight of the truck than what is possible in cars. Also given the number of wheels more scope for energy harvesting while braking?

Drive on,
Shibu.

Tesla’s all-electric semi truck, CEO Elon Musk released the first teaser image of the truck .

Revealed at a TED talk show,

Quote:
He confirmed that the prototype is already working and he even got a quick test drive around the parking lot. He added that the truck “feels like a sports car”.
Quote:
The CEO also confirmed that the vehicle will be capable of long hauls, which was previously uncertain due to its expected all-electric powertrain which requires an incredibly large battery pack in order to travel hundreds of miles with a large payload.

Tesla's New All-Electric Truck spotted out in the open. This futuristic semi-truck was recently spotted on a small airstrip known to be a common testing ground for Tesla,

Quote:
Tesla's all-electric semi could have a battery range of anywhere between 200 and 300 miles (321 to 482 km) per single charge. We're pretty sure that a removable wind deflector meant to decrease air resistance between the truck and the trailer would have a part to play in that.

The semi truck will be unveiled at an event on Thursday, October 26th in Hawthorne, California.

Tesla's Semi possibly caught on tape,

While it’s not confirmed if it’s indeed a Tesla test vehicle, it looks likely ann regardless, the truck does appear to be electric, which is interesting on its own

Tesla electric truck caught on video

YouTube user Jim Beaubien has spotted the upcoming Tesla semi-truck in action, albeit in the body of a regular truck.

It is highly likely that Tesla is testing the electric powertrain and battery performance of the truck. Visible clues to this claim include a lack of exhaust vents and a large battery pack behind the driver's cabin. A small diesel-powered engine is also heard, most likely powering the compressor for the air brake system. Under US laws, trucks must have an engine-driven compressor.

The jerk-free nature of the truck moving from a standstill is commendable. A few days ago, a similar mule was spotted along with the prototype of the Tesla truck at the Inyokern Airport, which is a known testing site for the company.

re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Tesla sent out the invites to its ‘Tesla Semi’ unveiling event in Hawthorne on November 16 and with the invites, it released a new teaser image.

Tesla is referring to as ‘the Tesla Truck’ instead of ‘Tesla Semi’ as it used to call it.

Quote:
The event was originally planned for last month, but CEO Elon Musk pushed the electric truck unveiling to Nov 16 “in order to focus on Model 3 production bottlenecks and battery production to help Puerto Rico recover from power outages affecting them since they were hit by hurricanes two months ago

re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

One interesting snipped from the presentation.

Ever heard of Coefficient of drag for tractor trailers.
The Tesla electric Semi-Truck-teslasemi.jpg
Well Tesla does!

They also talked about the low centre of gravity of the semi.
Interesting day thanks to Tesla with their twin unveils.

Tesla's first electric truck unveiled

Tesla has revealed details about the Semi - its first electric truck. The vehicle will be available in two configurations - with 480 km and 800 km ranges with a full load.

The truck has a sloping front end with a large shatterproof reinforced windscreen. There are no door handles or mirrors. The truck also gets a front storage compartment like other Teslas. The driver sits in the middle, which Tesla claims, improves visibility.

On the inside, two large touchscreens flank the centrally positioned steering wheel. Only the hazard button gets a dedicated switch, while all other functions are controlled by the two screens. The outer edges of these screens display the outside of the truck and function as rear view mirrors. Drivers will also get a smartphone app to manage their trucks. Features like autonomous, semi-autonomous driving and collision warning are standard. The batteries are placed low, in an attempt to lower the truck's center of gravity and reduce the risk of roll overs, while the truck also gets an anti-jack-knifing technology.

The truck is powered by 4 independent motors that are located between the rear axles of the truck. Tesla claims a 5 second 0-60 mph time without any load and 20 seconds when fully loaded at over 36,000 kg. The truck is also claimed to maintain a speed of 105 km/h on a 5% grade under full load.

The company will also be setting up solar powered Megachargers for these trucks. These will be able to charge a truck with up to 640 km range in 30 mins. Production for the truck is scheduled to begin in 2019.

re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Tesla is the new Apple.Their Semi truck will rule 700 billion $ industry!
What an amazing product.

Only Elon Musk can do this.
He places Chiron in a spec comparison slide for a truck launch then announces a car with numbers unheard from leagues of hypercars like Chiron.
