Sorry for interruption - but as a responsible citizens - shall we put the critical details of vehicles etc in such elaborate manner in 1 location which directly effects the safety of lives of our jawans ! This is their first & last line of self defense when they charter into unknown territories.

I would presume this vehicle would be tested more offroad than on the so called e-way. Maybe it was headed somewhere else

Well, this looks like it could be an option for all those kids standing out of the sunroofs of luxury sedans?

I believe they are not yet part of the armed forces yet and standard specifications are allover free media.

What I understand, Tata LSV is in similar line of Lenco BearCat used by specialized tactical forces of western world. They need not required always to be off-road capable or heavily armored. They might be testing for some other applications of the platform.
Beg your pardon sir, by sunroof did you mean the gun turret above the vehicle? I am sorry, but I could not get your point here.

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

Pardon my ignorance. But for the first time, I am a bit surprised to read some comments in TBHP. I am at a loss to understand why we are recommending so many things on this vehicle, and highlighting missing parts, when we do not even know the requirements/purpose at all. If this is for Indian Army, I am absolutely sure that they know what they need and so does the manufacturer. We are noway positioned to make an opinion at the first place. Are we? Am I missing something here?

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

This LSV & similar vehicles of its class are armored Technicals with some troop capacity, not MPVs. So the V-hull is not a design requirement. Under-body armor in this class is usually rated for simultaneous twin grenade explosions which a flat surface could withstand. These could be positioned alongside Humvee & its equivalents. They will not withstand any sort of mine blast, neither are they designed for it. Even top end MPVs won't survive such blasts beyond a certain intensity.

This is what powerful mines/IEDs do to top of the line MPVs. Yes, all of its troops survived but can't expect a technical to do the same.

There is no guarantee this LSV would be taken into the Army since around seven similar models are already in the fray for this contract. This one might just be the better looking one so far. All details are available publicly since several years & there's no new risk than what's already present. The tangos already know the breaking point of most of our vehicles more than us as evident from the naxal theater.

This is what this particular LSV in its old pattern was capable of. Underpinnings should be similar for the new gen as well.

This TATA vehicle looks robust in construction, however I doubt it is a Mine Protected Vehicle. Flat bottom and low tail lights give another impression.
I was in Sonpur (a place in Saran District, Bihar) famous for their mela where I spotted one MPV, here is what it looked like:

I meant to compare the unfortunate situation of kids standing out of sunroofs with this gun turret. One is needless, while the other is necessary

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

I have seen this vehicle at least 2-3 times in recent 4-5 Years of span. Have spotted mainly on Pune-Banglore NH48 (Previously Called as NH4) highway.

Even in the camouflage one can feel its solid and robust body. I guess purpose of this vehicle is solely for Army as there were lots of visible components which are rare to find on any civilian vehicles.

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

Spotted the test mule of this vehicle with MH-14 number plates going down from Kasol towards Kullu, in Himachal, last Friday.

It was doing good speed and disappeared before I could get a picture.

Seems some mighty testing is underway!

This mysterious Tata LAMV truck was again spotted on a high-altitude testing run up in the snowy mountains at an undisclosed location by Rohit Sood @ Facebook.

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

Just noticed, the initial photo of the vehicle spotted in Expressway and the last photo by RavenAvi at Himalayas bears the same number plate 'MH14TC178D'. Is it the same vehicle is driven over all the places or they have the same text number plate being used in different vehicles?

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

I have seen a similar vehicle on Pune roads (Kothrud; near the ARAI) last Saturday. Unfortunately no pictures. At the time, I thought it was like a extended Bolero or the Mahindra Maxx.
But on second thoughts, it seems likelier that it was one of these mules; but without the spare. is that possible or perhaps it was just another test mule?

re: Camouflaged Tata defence vehicle spotted on Mumbai-Pune expressway. EDIT: Its the Merlin

So far classified, I hope we get to hear the story of how this product developed.

We know that IA changed its requirements at least once, when the "light specialist vehicle" tender was changed to a "light strike vehicle". I frankly disliked Tatas first LSV solely by looks. But this one looks plain awesome.

It seems to have selected armour plating from the factory itself. Moreover, it was designed and tested with those armour plates. This means our army gets a first purpose built and designed vehicle. I say about time.

Order these by the thousands Mr. Jaitley.

PS: why is the air intake positioned lower?
