Reports suggest that a high level government panel has made this recommendation with an aim to reduce vehicular pollution. The government has also proposed to double the subsidy on electric 3-wheelers to bring down their price, on par with petrol or diesel vehicles.

The panel has reportedly made recommendations for 2-wheelers as well. Petrol powered 2-wheelers upto 150cc will be banned from April 2025. 2-wheelers with engine capacities larger than 150cc however will be allowed to ply.

The government is reportedly planning to introduce stringent fuel efficiency norms to force manufacturers to produce more electric vehicles. Further, increased registration charges on petrol and diesel vehicles have also been proposed.

If buses, cabs and autos switch to electricity, the return on this investment for the country will be huge. I am thinking about the cost of treating breathing/air-pollution related illnesses.

While at it, our cities should also consider electric motorcycle/scooter taxis. Get off a Metro, and get on a electric scooter taxi for the last mile. No head ache of parking, or charging. That would be the headache of the taxi guy. The 3 wheeler/auto rickshaw certainly protects from rain and sun, but I feel it gives a false sense of security.

3-wheelers would be a great place to start. A lot of us were pleasantly surprised when news broke out in Oct '18 that 11000 e-rickshaws are sold in India every month :Shockked:. It's probably a bit higher now?

India is currently home to around 1.5 million e-rickshaws, which is more than the total number of electric passenger cars sold in China since 2011. While government subsidies helped the EV sector to grow in China, no incentives were offered by the Indian government.

Mahindra and Kinetic are some of the biggest players in the US$ 1.5 billion electric 3-wheeler market. Then there are smaller companies that import components from China and assemble them locally.

While there has been a noticeable growth in the electric 3-wheeler market in India, the same isn't true for privately owned EVs. There are just 6,000 passenger EVs in India, compared to 1.35 million in China.

That's definitely a good move by the Government. All forms of public transport system can be electrified and setup charging infrastructure to support these vehicles. Slowly, force the private car buyers to adopt this technology as well.

A noob question: what about the increased power requirements of the country? Is the Govt. planning/adding sufficient additional power generation capacity? Are the power sources green/renewable as well?
Any statistics around these topics would be helpful to understand the overall impact of these Govt. rulings.

Actually all our power plants are working at a load between 40% and 65% of their capacity. The power shortage in some areas is due to the EDC's not having money to purchase power.
Power sold to farms is always at a loss, while that sold to domestic consumers barely covers purchase cost, without enough margin for overheads. The power sold to commercial and industrial customers is where the EDC's earn.

Commercial charging points are considered in HT3 industrial, so more the powerpoints more the profit to the EDC's.
