  • Commercial vehicles domestic sales fell by 88%, production by 83%, and exports degrew by 65%.
  • Tata Motors, M&M, and Ashok Leyland were the top 3 players of CV industry with each commanding 41%, 18%, and 14% market share respectively. VECV with 11% market share is not far away from the 3rd position.
  • Maruti Suzuki with Super Carry is making silent inroads into the CV space. Can be a serious contender in the small commercial vehicle space which was created by entry of Tata Ace, remember Tata was the 1st to enter/create the sub-4m sedan which later it lost to Maruti, same may happen now in CV space too if it doesn't protect its turf. Maruti is not an ignorable player by any means.
  • While all the OEMs saw a decline in exports numbers, Isuzu and Force were the only manufacturers to record positive numbers in exports this March.

Re: March 2020 Commercial Vehicle sales, exports and production figures

Due to the virus' impact on the economy, the outlook for commercial vehicles is quite grim.

On the positive side, it's interesting to note what Maruti is to hatchbacks, Tata is to commercial vehicles and Mahindra to tractors (link). We could also say that Ashok Leyland is the "Hyundai" of the CV sector.

The AL production degrowth percentage looks incorrectly calculated, if the production numbers are correct.

March production numbers should be 1,166 instead of 11,166 and then the percentage decrease comes out to be correct.
