Flights to nowhere! Taking a flight for the joy of flying

The airline industry which is down in the dumps, has got a new way to raise money, “flight to nowhere”. People who normally travelled from one place to another are flocking to just take flights for the joy of flying, which I think is good way to enjoy the moment and more importantly boost the industry. Qantas seems to have sold out the flight in minutes, something of a record for them.

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/f...tas/index.html

Quote:
The seven-hour scenic flight will perform a giant loop taking in Queensland and the Gold Coast, New South Wales and the country's remote outback heartlands. From above, keen fliers should be able to spot famous Aussie attractions including Sydney Harbour and the Great Barrier Reef. The jet will do a low flyover over certain landmarks, including Uluru and Bondi Beach.

Special onboard entertainment is promised too, including a surprise celebrity host.

re: Flights to nowhere! Taking a flight for the joy of flying

Read this and found it quite interesting. There's actually quite a few people who've signed up because they miss flying and/or want to help the economy. Since they're going to be flying at significantly lower altitude, it may make for a nice aerial sightseeing tour. And Australia and other south east Asian countries have a lot of such sights.

May not work long term as the initial novelty will wear off but whatever helps companies bring in revenue and keep jobs is appreciable.

Re: Flights to nowhere! Taking a flight for the joy of flying

I think people are just fed up of sitting at home. A flight will bring back all the fond memories of fun holidays . Nice to see people flying for the fun of it, like us BHPians drive just for the fun of it.

I think it sold out just because of the novelty value though. A couple more "flights to nowheres" and they'll be flying no one, nowhere.

Re: Flights to nowhere! Taking a flight for the joy of flying

I am not an airline expert but the real reason is that pilots need some minimum flight hour experience to keep flying. If they don't clock the required hours continuously the concerned national aviation body would consider them "out of touch" and stop them.
