Honda sets up battery sharing service in India

Honda has established a new subsidiary in India. Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt. Ltd. will provide battery sharing services for small mobility.

The company plans to start battery sharing services for electric auto-rickshaws from the first half of 2022. The service will be launched in Bangalore and will be expanded to other Indian cities in a phased manner.

Subscribers will be able to exchange their batteries with Honda's fully charged portable and swappable battery pack at the nearest swapping station.

Honda Power Pack Energy will also work with OEMs who wish to integrate Honda's battery into their vehicles.

Re: Honda sets up battery sharing service in India

Nice, setting up the groundwork for something bigger ?
Electriva with swappable battery on the cards ?
If yes then it would probably do the same to the electric scooters what the Activa did to the scooters.

Wishful thinking mainly but I doubt Honda will do something without an overreaching future benefit.

Re: Honda sets up battery sharing service in India

I have always been calling for the battery swaping technology for quick top up on the run. But, sadly, this will not be cost effective or less polluting in the long run. With honda's pricing attitude, it is highly unlikely to be percolating past the big cities. It will be some short term wonder but for some nation-ruining china-benefitting regulation.

This is a good move by Honda. Need to wait and watch how the details will pan out.

I have a few questions in mind:

1. Will there be a subscription model?
2. Can we buy a battery pack with warranty and can use the services until warranty expires? For Example: I buy a battery pack with 2 years warranty and I swap batteries by paying only the charging costs and a flat handling fee

Honda opens battery swapping station in Bangalore

Honda announced its battery-sharing service for electric auto-rickshaws in December last year. Now, the company has opened its first battery-swapping station in Bangalore.

The swapping stations, called Honda Power Pack Exchanger, have been installed in collaboration with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. at Banashankari, Trinity, KR Market, National College, and Baiyappanahalli.

Initially, Power Pack Exchanger will cater to electric 3-wheelers. Subscribers will be able to exchange their batteries with fully charged portable and swappable battery packs at the nearest swapping station. In the future, Honda’s upcoming electric 2-wheelers will use the same battery packs.

It is nice to see that Honda wants to be in EV space news before they actually launch their Activa with electric option. Sometimes I envy the planning method of our Eastern neighbor.

Re: Honda sets up battery sharing service in India

Earlier this year Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki & Kawasaki have agreed to a common specification for a swappable battery under the name Gachaco in Japan, using Honda Power Pack Exchanger. Opening of Honda's first battery swapping station in India is expected to lay the foundation for these big four Japanese two wheel giants to rapidly regain lost ground in the coming years using battery swapping technology.
