Tata & Cummins to develop hydrogen-powered engines

Tata Motors and Cummins have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop low and zero-emission engines for commercial vehicles.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Motors, stated that the company is strengthening its long-standing relationship with Cummins for their next-generation hydrogen propulsion systems. With the indigenization of this technology, Tata looks to expand its product range of green commercial vehicles.

The partnership between the two brands dates back to 1993. Thanks to recent developments, India will be one of the first markets to receive Cummins’ hydrogen engines in the future.

Cummins currently offers the B6.7H hydrogen engine that develops 286 BHP and 1200 Nm. The company has also developed a 4th-generation hydrogen fuel cell engine for medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses.

Re: Tata & Cummins to develop hydrogen-powered engines

There is a growing feeling among climate scientists and scholars that green hydrogen and other long standing carbon free technologies like nuclear fission and next generation of big and small scale nuclear fission as well as commercial fusion reactors are not getting enough importance and funding currently as major investments are being routed to solar and wind farms which takes much more land space (ie, per square feet of energy production) are getting all the investments and attention. Don't get me wrong coal is bad i mean really bad for the environment, but natural gas seems an alternative solution as we really dont have the resources to build the current form of lithium ion batteries to power all of the world with intermittent energy generation (wind and solar). Good to see tata partnering with cummins and ambani and adani are betting upwards of $70+ billion on these technologies. Also i think jcb is also working on hydrogen powered combustion engines for their excavators. We really need to bring next gen fission reactors which are more safer and commercially viable fusion reactors along with high energy density alternative battery chemistries like sodium ion etc.

Here is a good video explaining the same -

Running the B series engine on hydrogen is not such a big deal given that its CNG powered versions have been in production in India for over 2 decades.

This would be a big deal if and when it materializes!

Re: Tata & Cummins to develop hydrogen-powered engines

This is a dream come true.
Even it is a hydrogen based EV, I'd take it any day over conventional EVs.
Elon and his muskrats can lump it!

Re: Tata & Cummins to develop hydrogen-powered engines

H2ICE is a stupid idea period.

If a small Toyota car with rear seats removed and H2 tanks added needs refuelling every 40-50kms, what will be the range of these trucks with huge tanks 50-100kms? What will be the capacity of the truck compared to similar diesel truck, with half the truck occupied with H2 tanks?

Diesel trucks operate at ~30₹/km, H2ICE trucks may run at >200₹/km, H2 fuel cell may run at >50₹/km, while EV trucks run at <15₹/km. The reason why EV trucks & buses are becoming so popular.

The BMTC just announced how it is cheaper for them to operate EV buses per km compared to Diesel buses.

That put Robert in a very difficult position, he hates H2 for transport. In my opinion, JCB did not answer 2 very important questions, what is the cost to operate compared to diesel, how many times refuelling is needed for say 8 hours of operation.

Sorry to disappoint, this is not happening. Bet on a better tech.
