Yeti Airlines ATR-72 with 72 souls crashes near Pokhara, Nepal

An ATR-72 aircraft belonging to Yeti Airlines on final approach to Pokhara airport crashed shortly before landing. There were 72 souls on board, and 68 have already been confirmed dead.

Quote:
At least 68 people died today in Nepal after a plane carrying about 72 people from capital Kathmandu crashed in Pokhara this morning, news agency AFP said, quoting the police. There were 68 passengers and four crew members on board the plane that crashed between the old and new airports in the city, located in western Nepal. The twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft operated by Yeti Airlines was en route from Nepal's capital Kathmandu.

This has just happened so there's obviously no cause speculated for the crash but they have mentioned that the weather - one of the most prominent reasons for crashes in this region - was clear.

Video of the ill-fated aircraft just before it banked left sharply and crashed.

Very sad.

This is so unfortunate! And the weather seems perfectly fine. Wonder if there were other reasons (part failure, human error). Only time will tell once they retrieve the black box to get more clarity.

Rip for the poor souls.

Very sad news. May the departed souls rest in peace.

ATR-72 aircraft involved in this accident was 15.5 years old with manufacturer serial number 754.

Nepal Plane Crash

Very sad incident today. I wonder why Yeti Airlines has so much of a crash history. Why would Nepal Govt allow this to happen, year after year and crash after crash. This incident sucks the confidence out of one and all.

I have seen several episodes of Air crash investigations involving Kathmandu. Looks like it's a treacherous terrain to land. What I have seen is that it requires a Sierra approach in landing, in a stepped manner to counter the terrain.
May God give them the strength to endure the loss.

It seems to stall. Moments before the plane turns left and turns turtle, we can see the tail portion go down suddenly.

Rest in peace all departed souls!

Saw a very disturbing video on twitter taken by a passenger moments leading to the accident which I don't want to share here for obvious reasons but everything looked absolutely normal before the plane drops left. Felt so sad how life changes in seconds.

Any ATR pilots here? There was no visible deployment of flaps, looks like a stall on base leg if they were performing a visual approach. Matches with the increase in AOA & subsequent wing drop as seen in visuals.

Awful accident, RIP to those poor people that perished.

I looked at the video and it sure like it stalls. Although camera angles and lenses can play funny tricks. Even so, the roll rate seems to be very high. I have stalled planes as part of normal pilots training and even on my small planes I have never seen a roll that quickly.

Actually my first impression was the video was fake, or played at too high speed. Not sure though. I have not seen anybody commenting on the aviation/pilot forums that seems to know what they are talking about.

Not able to believe how on earth did the video go live on a a plane with possibly no internet and crashing into flames. Also going into flames in less than 5 seconds from what it looked everything normal.

If that is real, it is one of the most traumatic video.

Om Shanti

This is really heartbreaking. Nepal is definitely struggling with plane safety. In the last 30 years, Nepal has had a staggering 27 plane crashes, 20 of which were in the last decade, which is unprecedented for a nation this small.

There were 5 Indians on board too. India's government should talk to Nepal to assist in their aviation and various industries as it affects India directly. India can help Nepal with technology and knowledge transfer to improve their infrastructure.

From various news sites/social media. I am copying/pasting it as it is.

Quote:
Warning: Some heartbreaking information on the co-pilot and passengers. The co-pilot, Anju Khatiwada, was on her final flight before she finished her training period. The flight crashed 10 seconds before her mandated 100 hours would be complete. Saddest part of it all is that her husband died 16 years on a flight from the same company, Yeti Airlines, and she was training to become a pilot to fulfill his dreams. She has left behind a 7 year old son, with her second husband. One of the victims in the flight was an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Sushil Shrestha, travelling with his wife and his 10 months old baby, who are all confirmed dead. Another among the fatalities is a local singer, Nira Channtyal, who was famous in the Nepali folk music circle.

Burning is the most horrific way to die. I hope it was swift for all the unfortunate people involved, and they didn't suffer much.
ॐ शान्ति 🙏

I am no aviation expert, but from the video, it looks like all was well when suddenly the craft tanked. I suppose the reason will be clear once the authorities finish their examination and analysis.

The plane caught fire mid air before crashing.

Just came across this video.

The starboard engine seems to be on fire, while the video in post 2 shows no such fire. Dont think both are of the same aircraft. Also the video from passenger is on TheHindu newspaper website, shows no sign of fire on the passengers face/reaction just before crash.

I don't think it is the same plane. The tail section color does not match that of Yeti. Also the previous videos captured in Nepal do not show any smoke trail.
