I've driven a jeep off-road with this international tractor engine.
Man, that was TORQUE.
I drove up inclines with no throttle at all. Guess, thats what happens when one plonks a tractor engine into a 4x4 jeep.

International Harvester was an American company with which Mahindra used to have a technical collaboration. Two of International's models were made by Mahindra under license. One had a 4 cylinder 35 HP engine that found its way to Mahindra CJ jeeps in 1970s, in the aftermath of the oil crisis of 1973. The 35 HP tractor had a red body and was popularly known as "LAAL INTER". The bigger tractor had a stylish-looking yellow and cream body and had a bigger engine which probably developed 45 HP IIRC. This model wasn't as popular probably because it was more expensive.

Mahindra's collaboration with Internationl has been revived and they will now be jointly designing and manufacturing trucks and buses. The new JV is called Mahindra International Ltd. What is interesting about this JV is that it will not license-manufacture International's existing models (as usually happens with Indian auto JVs) but will design all-new models that are specific to India and other emerging markets and then manufacture them. How one wishes Maruti and Suzuki did that!

IIRC the tractors are meant to be high TORQUE machines...to do the ploughing...and I think there is something like a gear rod which is used to provide extra TORQUE or something like that..

Bringing this old thread to life. We are looking into purchasing a tractor for our mango farm.

I was wondering how good is John Deere? I drove the 55 hp tractor and its pretty solid and very comfy with power steering, obviously i wont be driving it long term but any reviews as far as build quality, spares and such goes? It has been in India for 10 years now.

We also own another escort tractor that is now 15 years old and have never had any issues with it, we now use that one full time in our foundry to pull out burnt sand from the castings so we need to buy another one for the farm.

Please let me know of any reviews suggestions since I need to make a decision soon.

Re: Want to know more about Tractors!

Hi, I am looking for a mini tractor (around 20HP range). Which is the one with less maintenance cost and better warranty coverage? Also does the 4x4 really useful for a mini tractor?
