Re: Mahindra in talks to buy entire promoter stake in SML Isuzu

This thread here did recommend Mahindra getting into collaboration with Isuzu.
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/india...ly-invest.html (Car brands that Indian carmakers can potentially invest in)

Posting here an extract with all credit the origin author.

Indian automakers showing Potential Interest: Mahindra Group, Mahindra would like to hold stake in Isuzu as it would enhance their image as the SUV maker and both companies can find a product fit among themselves.

Possible style of Investment:: Investment in stake, Japanese Government and niche presence of brand are reason why investment in stake will make sense

Definitely interesting...

Looks like car manufacturers can get ideas from team-bhp

It might seem a bit odd but Isuzu Japan has very little to do with SML Isuzu, other than a nominal 15% stake. Isuzu has given SML rights to build their trucks and buses in India. Incidentally, SML stands for Swaraj Mazda Limited! But they sold off their stake and the current promoters of SML Isuzu is a Japanese company called Sumitomo Corp.

If the deal goes through (deal is with Sumitomo & not Isuzu), Mahindra will get a boost in the school bus segment. That's because SML has 20% or 30% marketshare in this segment.

They have other buses and trucks too, but they don't sell THAT much. Marketshare would probably be in low single digits.

Hope they go EV for the intra city mini buses. It also gives them an opportunity to enter public city bus services where they are absent ?

SML already uses the vintage design from Mazda. I believe they are using engines from Isuzu.

Ashok Leyland would be a better fit with SML Isuzu.

Ashok Leyland may pick up majority stake in SML Isuzu.

Ashok Leyland, India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire the promoter’s stake in SML Isuzu. Negotiations are said to be ongoing between Ashok Leyland and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation.
