Re: RORO Freight Train For Trucks

This isn't new; it's been on Konkan Railway since more than a decade ago.

Re: RORO Freight Train For Trucks

The concept was first tried by KONKAN railways, almost 8 years back & was vehemently opposed by Truckers. However the recent addition of DOUBLE STACKERS & such initiatives are being embraced by truckers to counter business loss due to Inland waterways cargo movements.

Ironically DOUBLE STACKER had a derailing accident last week & about 30 of 90 containers were badly damaged.

These initiatives required better planning for train stoppages as drivers are left high & dry when trains stops right in middle of nowheres.

Regards

What are the drivers and cleaners supposed to do during the 10 hour journey? Will they be sitting in the truck? If so, how will take eat food or attend nature call or handle health emergencies?

Re: RORO Freight Train For Trucks

We as a Shell business unit were exploring this option for transporting fuel tanker trucks to reduce the RTKMs and in turn cost saving, however the feasibility model didn't work due to inaccessibility to certain routes. Over and above there was a pushback from Railways to use their own wagons for transporting fuel which would increase the infrastructure costs in terms of loading and unloading terminals and would still involve the transportation by road to the retail outlets.

AFAIK, in Konkan Railway's RORO there is a separate sleeper coach for drivers and conductors. They can check trucks during scheduled stoppages.

Astonished to find no coverage at all in mainstream media. Even YT has only a solitary video link.

There was some coverage on Twitter

39 rail cars were derailed with no injuries. No other major coverage as rightly mentioned by you.
