Was very interested to add extra bulbs in the tail lamp of my Figo after Tharian's post and completed this weekend.
1. What are the items required? - Bulb Holder (minimum 2 required - single or double filament or 4 holders)
- Bulbs
- Adhesive Tape
- Flower screw driver or Flower L key (size T 25)
- Wire cutter
- Sharp blade or stationery knife
- Permanent Marker Pen (optional)
2. Do you need any extra tools to do this?
Yes - One needs an Flower type screw driver or Flower type L key
You can use the normal screw driver (minus) but need to be careful as
it may slip and spoil the flower screw
3. Do you need any extra spares to complete this?
Yes - Need to have empty holders, bulbs
4. Is there any alterations in the DIY?
Yes - Need to remove the extra plastics which are used as locks in the
bulb holders
Need to splice the existing wires. One should know the correct wire to cut.
5. Can we get the original spares from Ford?
Yes - One can buy bulbs and holders. But note :
1. They are costly
2. Child parts like Holders are not available in loose. One has to buy the entire holder & wiring kit which is waste of money.
6. What has to be bought from normal Automobile spares shop?
1. Bulbs. There are two types of bulbs - single filament & double filament
Single filament - eg: Parking lights which has one illumination.
Double filament - eg: Brake cum Parking lights - An easy example - Ambassdor. When parking light is switched on, one filament glows and when the brake is applied the other filament glows giving a bright red colour cautioning the vehicles behind. This is the type used in Figo also. So depending on the requirement one can buy 2 single filament bulbs and 2 double filament bulbs which makes the tail lamp cluster completely utilised.
2. Holders - This is where one need to be careful. I am not able to find the right holder for Figo. The wiring kit consists of holders, wires and the connecting pin. The shop owner is ready to sell holders alone and I bought the same.
7. What is the cost?
This is my first DIY in this car and do not want to venture lot of things. So I went for basic modifications. As it is comfortable, I am planning to add two more bulbs.
Bulbs - 2 Single filament - Rs.60
Holders - 2 Single filament holder - Rs 80
(If you buy double filament bulb then one has to use the double bulb
holder as the contact positions differ)
Flower type L Key - T25 size - Taparia - Rs 65.
(T25 Flower screw driver is also there and the cost is Rs 90)
8. What is the DIY time?
Total 2 hours. Do the activity in a well lit place.
9. What are the precautions?
1. While removing the tail lamp after removing the screw, there are two plastic studs located at the top and bottom. Needs to be very careful while pulling the lamp. Use screw driver close the clip and push the lamp up. If the plastic stud breaks then the tail lamp will shake even when the screws are tightened.
2. After removing the tail lamp, pull the wires which is encircled by a rubber washer and remove the connectors. The connector may go inside the body which will make you frustrating. So carefully leave the pin to remain outside the body.
10. What are the risks after this DIY?
1. Checked with SC and there is no warranty problems as you are adding an extra bulb.
2. Since the holder and bulbs are sourced outside (local make), it may fuse or holder may become loose.
** Sorry for the poor quality of pictures taken by the mobile phone.
I want to ensure that this activity should be done in one shot. I removed the lamp a week back and noted the items to be procured before the activity. Second time it was easy to do.
I preferred to have an extra brake light rather than parking lamp. So I chose to cut the brown wire (double filament holder at the bottom).
This is not en easy DIY (may be for me) as one need to alter the holder to fix in the slot. Need to sleeve the protursions (which is used as lock) in the holder to push inside and rotate clockwise to get seated.
