Team-BHP - DIY: Flippy Key

Was always wondering if I can get my regular keys converted to a flippy key one along with the remote button functionality.

Lurked on this thread for a while flipping pages and realized it was an easy task.

Ordered one from ebay and managed to successfully convert the regular key into a flippy key!

Here are a few snaps from the DIY:

Yes, you can DIY.

And this guy can be trusted. I have bought my hyundai flippy key from him.

PS- There is one more model of flip key which has a blue ford logo for the same price and same seller. Go for that

Not sure if he has a shop in Gurgaon. I have got my accord key converted to flippy key from him. He has a tie up with a key duplicator machine operator in Surajmal Vihar, Delhi and provide you with the flippy key immediately if you co-ordinate and meet him at Surajmal Vihar.

The guy is quite professional and carries various options of flippy keys with him. You can select the one you want and he will transfer your key internals on the spot.

Took about 20 mins to duplicate the accord key and transfer the internals. Working fine for 2 months now.

I paid 1800 for the flippy key unit + 400 for the key duplication. I was told that a Honda key is complex and therefore costs more to duplicate than other keys.

My original key was opened (the body was broken anyway) and the entire unit with the switches fitted into the flippy key unit. So now when the flippy key switches are pressed, they are actually in turn pressing the original switches inside.

However, this guy has all options and said that he could even replicate the transponder unit if required. So much for security!

Simply go to a shop that advertises Computerized Duplicate Key makers. They will do this for you in under 10 minutes with a nominal charge.

Advise: Don't fit the remote circuit and transponder chip inside the shell and go to the key maker. Instead, go to the key maker first with only the dummy key blade provided as part of the shell along with your original key, get it duplicated and come back home and start assembling things inside the shell.

This will make things easy for the key maker to hold the dummy key blade on firmly.

You really don't need to worry about hand filing at all. The filing may only be required to remove fine(Read sharp) edges formed as a result of key cutting but this will not damage the key whatsoever unless the whole key is made using a file!

Here is the pic of the Transponder chip taken out from the OE key as well as the slot on the key fob where it fits. Make sure to wrap the transponder key with some thin paper like material/Tissue paper so that it fits into the slot in a secured manner.

If you picked the fob from ebay, at the bottom of the page there is a Youtube link as well which you can refer to accomplish your job.

Transponder Chip:
When you open the OE Key after loosening the screw, you will remove the black cap that covers the 2 Buttons for lock/unlock.

This side of the key will allow you access to remove the Button circuit which is of the size of a coin.

However, the transponder chip is located on the other side of the key and you need to remove the black cap on the opposite side using a paper knife and pressing the clips and pulling the cap out on the other side.

Again, the transponder is placed in the OE Key with very little place around to insert anything thick. Use a paper cutter's edge and pull the transponder out.

The above two pictures will give you an idea on what I am referring to.

Post a pic of your key here or visit www.flipkeys.in website has details for all those brands for which they have flip key shells.

Essentially, the flipkey shell should be able to accommodate 2 things precisely and that should require no workaround in any manner:

1. The remote Button circuit
2. The Transponder chip

I was finally able to get the flippy key cut and also succeeded in assembling it myself, thus a first DIY for me. The key goes into the slot smoothly, but then it doesn't turn smoothly either to start the car or to stop it, it is pretty hard. But, when I move it from the steering lock to cranking position, it is smooth, what needs to be done here? I am a little scared at breaking the key into half if I exert more pressure.

I personally would not recommend these silicon covers. One of my friend ordered this from Aliexpress for his Ecosport(Well, not much difference in quality as I see from the pics) that looked almost similar.

While it does fit onto the fob/shell precisely, it still is not a tight fit giving a very bad experience on handling the buttons.
