Team-BHP

The Tiago is a DIYer’s dream. I have frequently found bits and bobs to do with the car ever since I got it a year ago. Mine is a 2021 XZA+ AMT DT. The most expensive and supposedly top-specced of the lot. Yet, it lacks so much on the interior and the exterior! One may read through the TeamBHP threads and/or watch my uploads on YouTube for all the DIY I have done so far. A few examples are a front armrest, auto-dimming IRVM, parcel-tray strings and a rear 12v socket.

This time, I went about installing an OEM boot lamp. Perhaps the older models had one because there are slots for lamps on both the left- and right-hand side. Or maybe it is a panel part shared with the Tigor, which has a boot lamp.
Inspired by this video
https://youtu.be/MYDI9kD5tRA?si=d7GseXCE3m_1VaFi and dissatisfied with my own “jugaad” lamp, I went about getting things bought and ready for this DIY. My earlier attempt to Velcro a push-button LED spot lamp was not up to OEM standards, as one may see in this video.

Once again, I found myself heading to the Maruti workshop for a part to be fitted on a Tata car! The lamp is ditto amongst at least these two company’s cars. And it costs much less too. The Tata OEM lamp is Rs. 144
https://boodmo.com/catalog/part-load_area_lamp-6613697/ plus a shipping charge and a minimum order value of Rs. 399 from the website.:Frustrati
The identical one from Maruti is ₹96 over the counter! clap:Please note that the shapes of the left and right-side lamps are not similar.
This one would only fit in the slot on the right-hand side of the boot.
Other things needed:
-2.5 metres of wire. This cost me ₹20.
-long flat-head screwdriver
-short cross-head screwdriver
-electrical insulation tape
-super glue/glue gun
-soldering iron, flux, and wire
-optional extra-long laparoscopic forceps to snake the wire through
-you may or may not disconnect the battery. I did not.
Start by removing the cabin lamp with a flat-head screwdriver. It comes off easily.
Unscrew two + type screws of the lamp’s frame and pull the lamp’s harness outwards
Snake the wire towards the right-side B-pillar
Take the wire towards the rear C-pillar
Unfasten the panel fascia on the C-pillar. There are two yellow clips that are easily undone with a long flat-head screwdriver.
Bring the wire out through the slot for the lamp and replace the weather strips.
Make the connections on the cabin lamp. The black wire is neutral, and you merely need to slide in some exposed wire to make a connection. There is no need to splice or cut any original wires! Glue them together and tape them up for double security.
The green wire gets power when the switch is set to door open. I used this for the positive to have illumination only when the cabin lamp turns on with the door/boot hatch opening. Solder the wire to one of these two particular holes as indicated. Then glue an inch of wire to the board to secure it from vibrations. Tape it up for insulation.
Then you refit the cabin lamp to its frame with the two + type screws.
At the other end, since the car has no original couple or harness, I chose to solder the wires to the lamp. You will need to correct the wire’s polarity first. My lamp came with pen markings for the + and – terminals. Loosely touch and test your wires first to check for illumination on door opening. Solder them once you are sure.
Fit the lamp into the slot.
Test and re-test as many times as you like. Have a look at my video on YouTube for a better understanding of the method.

Thanks!
Isn't there any switch (or a provision for a switch) on the Tiago hatch door ?
My indica has a switch on the tailgate, and the light turns on only when the hatch door is opened
EDIT:
https://boodmo.com/catalog/part-swit...gate-37465894/
Looks like its a tiago only part. so you should have a way to fit it.
Further EDIT
I spotted the switch in the team bhp Review here
https://www.team-bhp.com/carpics/tat...ta-zica-33.jpg
(check to the left of the latch)
But the review also says manually activated light. (but that switch is a bit useless if its not being used to control the light - unless the roof light considers the hatch opening also, in which case the roof light supply is fine)
Since you are using the supply from a line meant to power LED lights, would suggest using an LED bulb in the boot lamp to keep current draw down.

You're right about the switch, and my car has it. Itf function is to indicate boot open on the MID. I'm sure there would be a way to utilise it for the boot lamp on and off too but I haven't figured it out.
LED bulbs are a definite upgrade, I am searching for some on amazon as we speak :thumbs up
After two days of usage, I have a complaint. The bulb is dim and a LOT of light is being lost to the rear of the lamp into the dead space behind the panel.
Would you suppose I whack on a small piece of mirror or tinfoil over the lamp's backside? Technically, hat should reflect all of the light into the boot area.

That can help a lot but make sure it does not touch any of the exposed terminals. Also as suggested by our fellow members earlier, since the system from factory is utilising LEDs, it may not be equipped to give the power required by halogen bulbs.
Off-topic: ther are simple small thimbles available off the shelf, like those of the horn but smaller which can be used to connect to the terminals of the light. I used to the same light in my Civic as glove compartment light.

I looked around for those thimbles at my local shops but nobody had any. I had to desperately complete the job on that particular day when I had no work in hospital and so I soldered them instead.

I had the same issue - I have already given the solution - I use an LED.
PLus I have found the lens and the reflector hinder rather than help -
This is how my Boot lamp is setup - the LED is angled a bit lower so that it fires directly into the boot. You could keep it immediately behind the lens to make sure no light is lost
This is what I am using

Maybe you can use something like this

I was unable to locate a suitable T10 LED on Amazon, but I came across several options on AliExpress. Unfortunately, they do not offer shipping to India, which is :Frustrati
I am in search of a product that emits light sideways, directing it outward in a manner similar to the one I found on Ali-express.

Could anyone confirm are w5w bulbs the same as T10s?

T10 stands for 10 mm bulb diameter, w5w stands for 5w power consumption. Most LED t10's can no longer be called w5w because of the lower power consumption, just "compatible"
In practice, sellers use the terms interchangeably (there are even more numbers if you want to get more confused :D )
Does the roof light come on when you open the hatch door?
If yes you can leave it on all the time

It does. Are you talking about the switch on the lamp? If yes, then yep i do keep it ON all the time
I see this on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.in/SIMTAC-Multi-P...73&sr=8-3&th=1
Also quite a few other T10 options:

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ram
