DIY Skoda RS Head Light Replacement And HID Upgrade

Recently my RS had to undergo a small accident which involved hitting a bikes rear Saree guard.Unluckily to say,it took away the glass covering of the right side head light.Shocked i was thinking about the huge cost involved to replace the head lamps at authorized service centers.

Some how settled the guy with 500 bucks as i was found to be the faulty one as i hit him from behind.Immediately i called up the skoda helpline and asked for the price of the head lamp. They told it costs a whopping 33k which include the xenon and the control unit.I dint require the xenon and the control unit as both of them where working fine. And also i intended to change both of the head lamps as it would look mismatching with one brand new and the other one pale yellow or else i will have to miserably sand the new one to make it pale.Hence it would cost 66k.I dropped the idea of getting new ones and looked for second hand ones.Saw many of them.but wasn't satisfied as most had huge scratches.Broken legs etc.

So i had to depend on other local dealers. They got me the new product,ie the two sets of head lamps without xenon, control units and the back cover.
i got it for 18 k.
I have seen all the work shop men working on the head lamps, they handle it so carelessly that all the small bits and pieces break and so causes scratched on the clear lens which later would be comes difficult to rectify.

Since my head lamps were brand new, i decided to do it up myself which could in turn save the some money given to the workshop men. I also bought a set of new HID's for my high beam. The low beam is already xenon. The high beam for skoda RS and L&K is of type H1.

Here is the detailed pictorial guide on how to change the head lamps and also install HID's.Sorry for low picture quality as all the pictures are taken from my phone cam.

The set of old head lamps.U could notice the broken piece.

Remove the screws on the control unit as marked in the image

The rear of the head lamp with the control unit attached The end i am holding is the control unit.

Take the control unit out.You could see the pins and the connector at the rear of the lamp. Its always safe to remove the control unit first as miss handling could break the unit connector leads.

Remove the screws as ,marked in the picture.Remember all the screws are of flower type.

Flip the cover side ways very carefully as the wires are brittle and could break.Reason being these are old wires and due to constant heat the plastic lamination could be brittle.Remove the connection from the fog lamp H4 bulb and the high beam H1 bulb. The pins are not that complicated. These are common male female pins and is easy to remove.

will continue soon.let me go have a cup of tea.

Continued

If you watch closely in the following image, you could see the holder for the hid(stock) xenon. It is similar to the normal bulb holder, but a little delicate.Gently rotate the holder in the anti clockwise direction.Be care full when taking it out.

And also notice the screws attaching the auto leveler motor to the unit.Remove that too.

I have taken some close shots of the holder so that the lock on the holder could be visible better

After removing the screws around the motor,we have to take of the motor. It is a little tricky part. The end of the leveling motor is bulb shaped. The bulb end gets into a channel and stays locked. What we have to do is slightly slide the lock upward so that the end can be slide out of the channel

Below shown are the photos of the channel and the motor.

Will be continued..

I did a similar DIY for my Octavia Rider. I did not have to install HIDs, rest everything was ditto. The leveling motor, low/hi beam bulbs, etc.
Great going. Keep us posted!

Nice job done. helpful for me since i am yet to finger around the skoda.
I am also planning to replace the headlights but not decided if to go for the xenon ones or stay with the older h4 and put in philips 90/100.
