Volkswagen has confirmed that the all-electric versions of the Golf and Up! models will be showcased at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month.



The production-ready e-Golf will be featured with an 85 kW (115 PS) electric motor that delivers a maximum drive torque of 270 Nm. This enables the vehicle to reach 100 km/h from a standing start in 10.4 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 140 km/h. The company says that the e-Golf will have a range of 190 km thanks to a 24.2 kWh battery.

Moving on to the smaller e-Up, the city car that provides seating is motivated by a 60 kW (82 PS) and 210 Nm electric motor. This translates into a 0 to 100 km/h sprint of 12.4 seconds and a top speed of 130 km/h. Fitted with a 18.7 battery, the Volkswagen e-Up! is good for 160 km on a single charge.

Standard features on both models include automatic climate control with parking heater and ventilation, radio-navigation system, windscreen heating, and LED daytime running lights, while the e-Golf also gains the company’s first full LED headlights.

In both models, two very efficient driving modes (“Eco”, “Eco+”) and four just as easy to activate regenerative braking modes (“D1”, “D2”, “D3” and “B”) help to extend maximum ranges. And they are driving ranges that make sense. In Germany, for example, studies by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development found that around 80 per cent of all car drivers in Germany drive fewer than 50 km daily. Quick charging. The fastest CCS charging stations (direct current) shorten the time needed to charge the battery of an e-up! or an e-Golf to 80 per cent capacity to around just half an hour.

Volkswagen Golf Plug-In Hybrid first drive review.

Solid reserves of torque from the get-go provide urgent step off qualities away from traffic lights and a flexible nature to the delivery on the run, making the new Volkswagen completely fuss free to drive. Mechanical refinement is excellent, with excellent cruising ability over longer journeys.

Based on the European test procedure, official consumption is put at nearly 190mpg. But, as our first drive around Wolfsburg revealed, the real word figure is more in the region of 70mpg.

VW to debut the GTE at the Geneva show


Volkswagen Golf GTE revealed, replica to the GTI and GTD - same body kit, sports exhaust and even tartan seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

The 8.8 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery can be charged from a socket behind the VW logo at he front, so you could drive this car in the so-called 'e-drive' mode indefinitely.
