Default Dyson to enter the automotive space with EV line-up

Dyson to enter the automotive space with EV line-up-dyson.jpg

Dyson is best known for its slick vacuum cleaners and room heaters/purifiers.
James Dyson, the man behind radically designed intended at “radically different” type of electric car than what was on the market.
Knowing the way Dyson disrupted the appliances market, this is going to be a serious entry to the EV market.
Though the plan is to have three models by the next decade, the firm is holding its bet on the Solid State battery technology for its line up.

Dyson is also a very outspoken Brexiteer. Only the other day he was telling other UK based manufacturers off for making noises about having to move out of the UK in case of a hard Brexit. Still, after brexit the UK won’t do for his factories it appears.Talk about being a hypocrite.

PS: A little anorak fact; if you believe that his jet air dryers as often found in washroom are hygenic, think again:

https://www.journalofhospitalinfecti...372-7/fulltext

From a hygiene point of view nothing beats a good old bit of paper towel. An interesting case, where new technology (hot air dryers, jet dryers) have made things worse, not better)

Dyson electric car project cancelled!

The electric car project has been scrapped as it wasn’t commercially viable, though Dyson promises to continue developing technology surrounding the project.
Quote:
The firm had been planning to produce the car at a new factory in Singapore, and was shortly due to start on the hugely capital-intensive project of developing and tooling up that site. Dyson added that the firm did go through “a serious process to find a buyer for the project which has, unfortunately, been unsuccessful so far.”

Such a shame it had to be cancelled. The design looked striking as well as the attention to detail.

Here's the link to their press release where they described their journey.

"So, some years after the diesel exhaust project started, when we had other technologies of our own, like batteries and motors, we returned to the problem and started developing a car. We put together an exceptional team, built world-class facilities, and developed a radical car which was loaded with technology. We solved lots of problems that are traditionally associated with electric vehicles and together the team made great progress and delivered a car which was ready for production.

The car is exactly five meters long, with big wheels and huge ground clearance which is helped by the fact it has a completely flat bottom. The wheels are actually one of the most interesting aspects; because of their size, you get lower rolling resistance and you can ride bumps and potholes more easily - it’s exactly the opposite of a Mini. The wheels are right in the corners and I don’t think you’ll find any other car with the rear wheels as far back as this. The placement and size of the wheels gave us some unexpected advantages in comfort and road holding.

Building on our years of experience with Dyson Digital Motor technology we developed a bespoke, integrated and highly efficient Electric Drive Unit (EDU) comprising Dyson digital electric motor, single speed transmission and state of the art power inverter. These compact and lightweight units were mounted on subframes at the front and rear of the car.

The high capacity battery pack assembly was designed as an integral part of the body structure to optimise both weight and the space available for occupants in the cabin as well as providing the necessary rigidity and impact protection. The aluminium battery pack casing was flexible in design to allow for a variety of possible sizes and types of battery cell solution to be fitted throughout the life of the vehicle platform without the need for any significant re-engineering."

I have a strong feeling this is not dead yet. Dyson may have killed their ambitions in the project but there are investors out there that want to cut the development cycle and therefore faster to market who will buy this project where it was left off and take it further. In all probability, it will be some Chinese company. It may not be promising enough for the Big European or American makers to buy though since each have spent a bit on their own EV developments. We'll see.

Check out the July copy of the UK Top Gear Magazine.

On the front:

Quote:
That sucks! Dyson explains his £500M flop
Inside five full pages with the man himself and lots of images of his shelved project. The opening paragraph says it all:

Quote:
Tesla has not yet made a profit. The other carmakers are prepared to shoulder losses because selling EVs lowers their average emissions. We would have to compete with manufacturers that are happy to lose money making electrical cars. I’ve got to make a profit. In the end I just deemed it too risky. It’s no fun making a product that doesn’t make money. It’s almost banal is it not. Britain greatest inventor, its richest man, cancelled his electric project not because it couldn’t be done, but because he foresaw it probably would have made him less rich
Well, the less rich is still in the cards I would say. Dyson is a hardcore Brexiteer. And we are headed for a hard Brexit with all of its consequences on top of a country that messed up its handling of the Corona virus to boot.

Obviously, he has off-shored all his production facilities, but still.

I don't like his hoovers, I don't like the man.

Not impressed. If Tesla, Ford and GM can produce ventilators overnight, one would expect a company that actually makes them to do so too.

All Dyson products look like props from a Starwar movie.

I believe Tesla 'ventilators' were pure marketing. Almost all smoke and mirrors stuff, no substance.

The UK refused to buy Dyson's ventilators, diplomatically saying that it was surplus to requirements!

That's not correct to my understanding and what I read. Tesla has provided the BiPaP ventilators which are very much required before the patient condition worsens(with bipap you can stop a patient slip into worse condition). Once the patient condition worsens you require the actual ventilator( do not know what it's called) and once the patient condition worsens to that level the chances of survival are 12%(IIRC).

As with any Tesla product, you have 100 real users (doctors and nurses saying it adds value) and you have 1000's who do not like Tesla or Elon(for whatever reason) shouting their lungs that Tesla did not provide real ventilators.

Even california governor did not acknowledge about donations done to the hospitals, Elon has to show email proofs from hospitals to prove that he actually donated and the doctors were satisfied with the ventilator usage.

Musk provided BiPAP machines. Fine. Then he made a huge hue and cry saying that these were proper ventilators. And did not like being contradicted. He got away without serious repercussion only because it was a gift/ donation, not a commercial transaction. Musk is landing up with a serious God complex!

Anyway, my reference was not to these 'ventilators', but to his 'ventilators to be made in the Tesla factory in Buffalo, NY'. Seems to have gone the way of Dysons. Or our own Mahindras.
