UK wants an EV charger in every new home

UK wants an EV charger in every new home

The UK government has announced the ‘Road to Zero’ strategy to promote low emission vehicles including hybrid and electric vehicles (EV). The government will roll out the required infrastructure and aims for at least 50% of all new cars sold to be ultra-low emission by 2030.

At present, 1,67,000 plug-in vehicles share just 16,000 public chargers on UK’s roads. Most EV owners charge their cars at home or at work. Public charge points are only used during long distance drives. The Road to Zero strategy aims to have a charging point in all new UK homes in a bid to promote EV usage. The government also aims to retrofit all the existing street lamps with chargers for EVs.

Last year, Britain announced a ban on sale of internal combustion cars and vans by 2040. The Road to Zero strategy builds up on this and includes plans for green infrastructure, which includes home and lamp post based chargers for EVs, vehicle charging facilities at motorway services and fuel stations, an additional fuel charge to discourage fossil fuel cars and a GBP 400 million fund for EV charger manufacturers and installers.

The UK is going about this most important change in a thoughtful sensible step by step manner. By looks of it they will get there too. A slight contrast to our worthies in New Delhi I might add.

In Indonesia, Honda is working on replaceable battery packs for two wheelers. Hope they succeed since in our country, people like in sales, delivery etc need to keep moving throughout the day.
For us office goers, we can plan and charge it once overnight or use (non-existent yet) the public transport. Someone outside our govt needs to decide on the logistics since our worthies have a lot of things to do. Else they take drastic decisions.

I really like the idea of retrofitting charging points in the street lights. They may work in the UK, but in India, they will disappear within a few days.
