Default Rumour: UK man invents electric car battery that lasts 2400 km when charged

Today I came across this news article:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...arging-it.html

It sounds too good to be true. Article is pretty long with details of the Ex-Navy officer - Trevor Jackson's attempts at building/inventing this technology.

Adding the image from the article:
Name: 199408647592485imagea64_1571527699892.jpg
Views: 1086
Size: 111.9 KB

and a snippet:

Quote:
After years of experimentation at his workshop in the Cornish village of Callington, Jackson's eureka moment came when he developed a new formula for the electrolyte that was neither poisonous nor caustic.

'I've drunk it when demonstrating it to investors, so I can attest to the fact that it's harmless,' Jackson says. Another problem with the 1960s version was that it worked only with totally pure aluminium, which is very expensive.

But Jackson's electrolyte works with much lower-purity metal – including recycled drinks cans. The formula, which is top secret, is the key to his device.
I searched around on inter-web and found many other news articles about this. If true- this would be a great invention and would accelerate the Electric vehicle adoption across the globe.

@Mods: I could not find a thread on this topic. Please move it to appropriate section if it doesn't belong here.

Default UK man invents electric car battery that lasts 1500 miles when charged

"Ex-Navy officer turned inventor signs a multi-million deal to produce his electric car battery that will take drivers 1,500 miles without needing to charge"

1500 miles = 2400 KM

Now, if this is true, then it surely is a breakthrough that hasn't happened in ages. This could well turn the tables on fossil fuel and there could alsp be "resistance" in the horizon.

Sounds too good to be true. The article itself is low on details, and more on drama. But if true, there are several lobbies at work to make sure that it never sees the light of the day.

Rosy article. Aluminium Air batteries (metal-air batteries in general) are not new, extensive research has been on for decades.

These type of batteries/fuel cells have serious challenges albeit having very high energy densities.

- They are primary cells, i.e., non-rechargeable.
- Energy conservation, regenerative braking etc., not feasible.
- Need a whole new supply chain to recycle used batteries. Overall energy efficiency stands at about 15% only marginally better as compared to 13% of IC engines.
- Technology is not graduated, many technical problems remain to be resolved.

If it is true, he should definitely be one of the awardees of the Nobel Chemistry Prize 2020.
This year's Chemistry prize went to 3 scientists for their work on the Lithium Ion battery.

Yep, it sounds too good to be true. I had just posted about it earlier yesterday :

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...le-charge.html (New Battery Technology [1500 miles range with a single charge]!?)

@Mods, probably you can merge both the threads

'Ramar Pillai' moment of UK. Every generation somebody rises to make such claim about breakthrough in energy.

Yes, and he's also achieved cold fusion in his basement.

A few Indian engineers have achieved something similar:

There are videos too that show their prototype.

Per article, they tried to stop him at the initial stage itself.

"Two years ago, Jackson claims, motor manufacturers lobbied the Foreign Office to bar him from a prestigious conference for European businesses and governments at the British embassy in Paris, which was supposed to agree a blueprint for ensuring all new cars are electric by 2040. The bid to exclude him failed"

Its hard to believe someone is ready to spend multi million $ on nothing

Per article, he already signed a multi million dollar contract with investor too

"He has also secured a 108,000 grant for further research from the Advanced Propulsion Centre, a partner of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. His technology has been validated by two French universities"
