I believe the Germans are late to the 'electric party'. I was watching this documentary where they rued this fact (could prove disastrous in 5 years, given the changing tide) and committed to fast tracking the electric onslaught. Tesla has taken the fight right to their heartland, and is symbolic in a way.

If am not wrong, the Tilburg factory in NL handles model X/S production for Europe. Not sure about model 3 though.

I must say it’s a brilliant move for Tesla, taking the fight to Germans in their backyard!
Model 3 was the highest selling EV in Germany this year so it’s gonna get better and better for them in the long run.
Looking forward to all the software/design jobs being created in Berlin though

Are there going to be many? I thought this was going to a production and assembly fascility.

Not sure how much software and or other design work would be taking place?

An interesting read on how different German culture and legislation compared to the USA. Many American companies have failed spectacularly by underestimating these differences and not acting upon it.

German government has been saying around 7000 jobs would be created and a small percentage of that would be design/sofware. Am banking more on it as Tesla is more of a software oriented car than the traditional ones.
Plus they plan to open another design center in Berlin itself (no concrete plans yet though)

An interesting read on how different German culture and legislation compared to the USA. Many American companies have failed spectacularly by underestimating these differences and not acting upon it.

Berlin is going to come really handy in that case, the culture is very international here and the work dynamics are different than Bavaria thank to all the expats. It's a startup city which will help Tesla as they come from valley culture. Not saying it will be smooth from the start but it should be fine as long as there are sane heads in top management.
Plus German Government is very receptive of Tesla and they will sort of make sure that he gets all the necessary approvals (this would be done by now)!

Tesla gets court approval to clear forest for German Gigafactory.

BERLIN: Tesla Inc got approval from a German court on Thursday to continue to cut down forest near the capital Berlin to build its first European car and battery factory, in a defeat for local environmental activists.

The court said in a statement it had rejected urgent applications to stop the land being cleared of trees from several environmental groups, adding its ruling was final. It had temporarily halted the tree felling earlier this month.

Lawmakers from Germany's pro-business Christian Democrat and Free Democrat parties had warned that the legal battle waged against the Gigafactory would inflict serious damage on Germany's image as a place to do business.

Actually this is not a forest, it's a monoculture of trees grown for paper or whatever purpose, thus the court rejected the plea to save the so called forest.

Tesla stops production at Berlin factory after arson attack by activists.

Tesla has stopped production at its Berlin factory after a group of activists set fire to an electricity pylon servicing the factory and nearby towns.

The activists, who call themselves the Volcano Group, published a 2500-word letter claiming responsibility for the attack while calling CEO Elon Musk a “technofascist”.

It accused Tesla of "consuming earth, resources, people, workers and in return spitting out 6000 SUVs, killer cars and monster trucks each week".
