Ssangyong has confirmed that it is on course to launch its first electric SUV early next year. The South Korean utility vehicle brand, which is part of the Mahindra Group, is not in good shape having posted losses for the 13th consecutive this year and burdened with heavy debt. Mahindra, which is relooking subsidiaries that are loosing money, has said that it would invest no further in Ssangyong, raising questions on the product programs that were in the pipeline.

On 1 July, Ssangyong said that it will invest in product development for the future including Korea’s first mid-sized electric SUV to be released in early 2021.

SsangYong’s first fully-electric model is named the Korando e-Motion and the e-SUV will be unveiled by the end of 2020, reports Korean auto site AutoHerald. The sale of Ssangyong Korando e-Motion in South Korea will start in January 2021, the report adds.

Inside, the e-Motion will feature a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, Level 2.5 autonomous driving functionality and IoT features. The C-segment electric SUV, as per AutoHerald, will have a range of over 400 km and driven by a single motor.

Ssangyong started testing its electric SUV prototypes in 2019. Believed to be powered by Mahindra’s MESMA electric architecture, a prototype was spotted earlier this year at Alice Springs, Australia by a WhichCar reader. In India, the Mahindra eXUV300 will be the first car to be built on the MESMA architecture, which was shown at the Auto Expo 2020 as a near-production concept car.

Korean SUV specialist looks to all-electric future, with larger J100 flagship also on the way.

Ssangyong will also speed up development of its second EV, a medium-sized SUV under the project name J100 that's set to launch in 2022 - seemingly as a spiritual successor to the long-defunct Musso large SUV.

European deliveries of the Korando e-Motion will begin in August, with UK deliveries expected later this year, due to the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors.

Ssangyong said that it will aim to become the driving force of its own self-rescue plan, with a full-scale move towards meeting the future demands of the international automotive market.

Ssangyong Korando e-Motion debuts with Mahindra's EV platform

Ssangyong has unveiled its first battery-electric vehicle, the Korando e-Motion SUV. Production of the new mid-size electric SUV has begun, with deliveries in the UK and other European markets expected to commence later this year.



The e-Motion is based on the brand's regular IC-engine powered Korando SUV. Hence, the electric SUV carries forward a similar design, apart from a few changes. These include an updated front fascia with a restyled bumper, repositioned fog lamps and a closed-off grille. The electric SUV also features a new aerodynamically designed set of alloy wheels, along with blue highlights all around.



The new Ssangyong Korando e-Motion SUV is said to be based on the Mahindra Electric Scalable & Modular Architecture (MESMA). The Korando e-Motion is powered by a 61.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack sourced from LG Chem, offering a maximum driving range of 420 km as per the old NEDC test cycle (expected to offer 322 km as per the newer WLTP cycle),

While the details of the electric motor on the e-Motion are yet to be revealed, Ssangyong claims that its electric powertrain pushes out close to 190 BHP and the vehicle has a top speed of 152 km/h. The company also claims that the Korando e-Motion will offer 'best-in-class' acceleration figures.



Along with the unveil of the Korando e-Motion EV, Ssangyong also took the opportunity to announce its next electric SUV for the international market. Codenamed 'J100', the second electric SUV from the brand will be positioned below the Rexton, with its launch scheduled in 2022. The Korean brand has plans of introducing electric pick-ups in the future as well.

Ssangyong's J100 is named Torres. Confirms EV variant for Europe.

Torres will fill the gap between “semi-medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and large SUVs like Rexton”. The company hopes that by creating an additional segment it will be able to increase its market share benefiting from the increasing popularity of rugged-looking SUVs.

SsangYong will start taking pre-orders for the Torres this June, starting from the Korean market.

A fully electric version of the SUV, codenamed U100, will be introduced in Europe towards the end of 2023.
