The company has stated that both the X1 and 5 Series will be offered with four powertrain options. In addition to the electric variants, the models will get a petrol mild-hybrid with a 48V electric system, plug-in hybrid and diesel engines. The X1 and 5 Series EVs will compete with the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 respectively.

BMW has lined-up a five more electric vehicles for next year. The i3, i4, iX3 and iNext from BMW and the Mini Cooper SE will arrive by the end of 2021.

In the wake of stricter emission regulations, the carmaker aims to reduce carbon emissions from its production facilities by 80% per vehicle. The European Union mandates a 40% reduction in emissions between 2007 and 2021. Besides, all carmaker are required to reduce emissions by 37.5% from 2021 levels.

In all, BMW is planning to launch 25 electrified models by 2023.

Re: All-electric variants of the BMW X1 & 5 Series on cards

Seeing the EVs that BMW has offered so far, I can confidently say that the company is 10 years behind Tesla. Their efforts have been lame & limited so far. It's quite laughable that they are still selling the i3 which was launched in 2013.

In fact, BMW's own German competitors - Audi & Mercedes - appear to have a stronger technical understanding of EVs.

Really on the cards? With ever tightening emission norms and European countries encouraging the adoption of EV's, this is pretty lame from BMW. They would still be late even if the 5 Series electric was on sale TODAY.

Re: All-electric variants of the BMW X1 & 5 Series on cards

New spy photos confirm that BMW is moving forward with the test mules of the new electric, at the same time as the new generation of the X1, the third generation.

Quote:
It is provisional and not definitive the position of the battery charging plug on the mule of the BMW iX1

It is the temporary location of the battery charging plug that they have housed in the fixed glass of the rear pillar. In addition, can be seen an extra on the side skirts to disguise the new UKL 2 platform under the body, which has the battery pack between both axles, although from the rear view it is possible to see a bulky fairing of the bottom.
Quote:
The future BMW iX1 will have the new design that will offer the combustion X1, although the front grille will be specific, vertical and narrow and with the interior closed. A new design that we will also see inside with a dashboard with a large curved screen
Quote:
Technically, the so-called U11 will mount an electric motor on the front axle that will send power to these wheels, and of which it is not yet known to be a power figure. Instead, we do know that the brand will mount a lithium-ion battery with two capacities, 38 and 76 kWh, so the maximum range will vary between 180 and 400 km.

Re: All-electric variants of the BMW X1 & 5 Series on cards

BMW has been so slow in the EV space. They started off on the right path with the i3 and i8 but then quickly lost focus. Its laughable how they thought EV were a fad and would catch on. I think even their CEO and MD made some funny comment about EVs recently in the last 1-2 years. If they were keen they couldve launched the i3 in India at an attractive price but they never bothered and at 80 lacs thats not an attractive price at all.
