Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

Many European countries, especially major car markets in Europe are registering tremendous growth for Electric Vehicles in 2020. Here are some interesting EV stats for September 2020:
  • Germany:
BEV: 21,188 cars sold with 8% market share (+260% YoY)
    PHEV: 20,127, 7.6% market share (+463% YoY).
  • UK:
    BEV: 21,903, 6.7% market share (+184% YoY)
    PHEV: 12,400, 3.8% market share (+138% YoY).
  • France:
    BEV: 10,009, 5.4% market share
    PHEV: 7,839, 5.1% market share
  • Norway:
    BEV: 9,560, 61.5% market share (+57% YoY)
    PHEV: 3,129, 20.1% market share (+174.7% YoY)
  • Sweden:
    BEV: 3,643, 12.7% market share
    PHEV: 6,203, 21.6% market share

Other interesting tidbits:
  • All these are September numbers which are much higher than even August numbers in many countries. In August itself, EV market share reached 11% in entire Europe with growth of 171% YoY. Major factors for this tremendous growth in Europe is due to broader availability of EV models from many companies like PSA group, Hyundai/Kia, Renault, VW group and tax incentives and subsidies from almost all the major countries.
  • Norway is planning to ban petrol/diesel cars by 2025. At this rate with more than 80% share in 2020 itself, the ban may not be even required.
  • PHEV growth is driven by very border availability of models from luxury car makers. All these PHEVs have at least 30 miles (~50kms) EV only range
  • Charging infra also growing at rapid pace across the Europe. Many charging networks are exclusively powered by solar and wind power.
  • Till 2018, China was the biggest market for EVs. But since 2019 Europe EV sales achieved much higher market share and continue grow at much higher pace than China. In fact, China EV sales posted negative growth in 2020.

I believe EV market share will reach more than 50% by 2025 in Europe with some countries reaching 60 or even 70% by that time. Subsidies will be reduced or removed in next 1-2 years in many countries. By that time, competition and battery price reductions will bring the EV prices down.

Delighted to hear this. This is the way of the future. Hybrids and plug in Hybrids too will fall by the way side very soon. ICE lovers and nay sayers may lament but an idea whose time has come cannot be stopped. To all those cynics out there - solutions for disposal or recycling of the batteries will be found and even countries like India are moving towards renewable sources of energy increasingly. We owe this shift to our children and grandchildren. I suspect cargo carrying ships will be the next to switch. Their volume allows for space and weight of batteries. Also at slow speeds, for their size, they consume very little power. Don't know when gas guzzling airliners can switch.

And finally the bigger picture - Antarctica is melting faster than previously thought. Bear in mind the youngest of you will likely live to see the sea level rise by a metre or two or three by your old age. Take it from me old age creeps up faster than you expect it to.

Those are seriously incredible numbers. I actually went to see if there were any terms & conditions attached to the stats . Early adoption of EVs requires major support from the government & this shows just how EU govts are pushing things. Ditto in China too - the Chinese authorities are almost betting the future of their auto industry on electric.

Somehow, we're not seeing the same in USA. Heck, Tesla has done more for EVs there than Washington.

India? Not even worth talking about the support for EVs here.

Major reasons for the EV growth in 2020 in Europe are:
  • CO2 emissions targets. If not met, companies need to pay heavy fines. FCA group is actually paying Tesla for credits to avoid fines.
  • Increased subsidies for EVs in Germany and France from H2 2020. Tax cuts for company cars in UK from April 2020.
  • Broader availability of different EV models.

While subsidies may expire in 1-2 years in many countries, EU is planning to impose even stricter emission targets. Competition and battery price reductions will bring price parity with ICE vehicles in future.

Its not just the subsidies or tax incentives. Even bigger reason is CO2 emission targets which if not met will result in fines worth billions of euros.

Quote:

China subsidies are reduced drastically from last year which caused degrowth in EVs from last year. Till now, most of the EV sales in China are from domestic brands. Starting from this year, we should see more models from foreign brands like Toyota, Honda, VW group, BMW, etc...

China is not betting everything on EVs. From the last 1-2 years they are encouraging and subsidizing fuel cell vehicles also for some strange reason.

Quote:
Somehow, we're not seeing the same in USA. Heck, Tesla has done more for EVs there than Washington.
USA is actually ahead of other countries in subsidizing EVs in term of tax credits. Federal tax credits of $7,500 are available for many years. There are also many state subsidies in addition to federal tax credits. Problem is, there are no emission targets in USA. Only in few states these are mandatory. That's why many countries are ignoring the US market or launching EVs in only few states.

Quote:
India? Not even worth talking about the support for EVs here.
India is actually supporting EVs more than Germany or UK and many EU countries. Even though there are no direct subsidies, EVs are taxed at just 5% while ICE vehicles are taxed at 31%-50%. This will result in benefit of 25 -45% in price compared to petrol/diesel vehicles. Battery cells and charging equipment are also taxed at just 5%. These tax benefits are the reason why Hyundai, MG and Tata are able to release their EVs at such low prices in the country.

On the other hand, while Germany, France and UK are providing some subsidies, they are also charging ~20% VAT on EVs just like ICE vehicles. So, they are still getting more revenue from VAT than what they are giving back in terms of subsidies.

Honda is aiming to phase out pure internal combustion engines from its European line up by the end of 2022, Honda’s line-up will be a combination of full electric and hybrid. The firm's senior vice president, Ian Howells, has confirmed.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

EU will lead the transition to EVs. With a smaller geography, it is always easier to build a charging network and ditch ICEs.

But what really drives this is the will of the people & governments. Most governments have the support of their people to ban IC engines by 2040. Heck, some EU residents wanted to use the train instead of the flying to reduce emissions. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/comme...t-shaming.html (Europe: Air travel hit by Flight Shaming)

Wouldn't really compare EU & China because of the society, but I think both countries are going to lead the way in EV adoption. The US is very fragmented and will enact a national mandate only when things get terrible.

The outgoing administration kept fighting California on the states more stringent emission norms. Clearly shows the power of lobbies funded by Detroit & Big Oil. I hope things change with the result of the recent elections. As of now, only California and Québec have banned IC engines from 2035.

Interesting - I'd never have known this until I read your post. Many people won't know this ever.

I think GoI should put $$$ into the buyers account in the form of tax credits or cash back. This'd be more effective than some obscure and/or indirect tax reduction.

Re: Europe is going Electric! EVs are seeing big market-share gains

UK has announced that only EVs will be registered after 2030. Very unequivocal statement. US will continue arguing about how to avoid it. Even now Taxis in Norway are Tesla3 with free charging. With excess of Power in Norway giving free power is a given.

It is not only about the sale of cars, but also the growth in charging infrastructure that stimulates more people to buy and lease EVs:

Bit ironic considering Norways wealth came from North Sea Oil. However, they invested the revenue very carefully and spend much more judiciously and they need not rely solely on oil in the future for revenue

I do not think it's ironic, they have oil to sell, the world needs oil for consumption, whether Norway sells oil or not there are plenty of sellers to fill in the gap if Norway stops selling. If anything Norway is making the best use of the oil money, by going renewable, by going electric instead of going for wars like other oil selling countries often do.

Hyundai stops sales of ICE only vehicles, going forward cars with plugs only will be sold in Norway, almost 4 years before the ICE sales ban.

Hyundai Motor Norway says they have now sold their latest pure fossil car in Norway. From now on, only a fully electrified and rechargeable model range applies.

54.3% of new cars sold last year in Norway are BEVs. 74.7% cars in 2020 had a plug(BEV OR PHEV). December saw sales of 87.1% cars with a plug.

Europe with short distances and an excellent infrastructure is far more EV ready that anything else. Remember Finland went EV years ago, and the charging stations are free. The standard Taxi is a Model 3 of Tesla. I hope we set up power grid fast for EVs.

What? Did you have Norway in mind?

Finland lags behind a lot of countries when it comes to EVs (Source)

I have heard of some charging station offering free slow (AC) charging earlier, but not anymore. Of course, malls/supermarkets have parking spots with free charging, but I believe these are limits on the usage. When it comes to charging infrastructure, even the Tesla supercharger network is not very extensive. I can find a decent number of Teslas in the capital region, but have never seen Model 3 taxis.
