Tesla Motors will route its India investment through Dutch arm

Tesla Motors Amsterdam is the parent company for Tesla Motors and Energy India, indicating that the Elon Musk-led electric car maker has used the tax-friendly jurisdiction of the Netherlands to route its investment in India.

This corporate structure in India would offer Tesla tax benefits related to capital gains and dividend payments, say experts.

Also, Tesla’s choice is an exception to the general trend in the auto industry. MG Motors that entered India in 2017 invested via China, which is also the home jurisdiction for its parent company SAIC Motors.

Similarly, India investments of KIA Motors came from South Korea, which is also the corporate home of KIA Corp.

Tesla to set up its base in Gujarat

Tesla is set to begin its India journey with its highest-selling Model 3, before the premium Model S and Model X, which would be available later in the year and in early 2022

Along with Gujarat, the company is also in talks with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to set up its facility. Das said with Gujarat emerging as a hub for renewable energy, the cost of power will be very competitive in the state. “Companies will be able to take advantage. Gujarat also has strategic advantages like ports and proximity to all major markets of India. In the past two months, we have had significant communication with the company and explained our new industrial policy and other advantages of being in Gujarat,” Das said.

GANDHINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Gujarat, which has emerged as a preferred destination for global automobile giants, has made a strong pitch to invite Tesla — a leading name in the manufacture of electric cars — to set up base in the state. The company, which is setting up its research and development centre in Bengaluru, is in touch with a few states, including Gujarat, to start India operations.

Manoj Das, additional chief secretary (ACS), Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and in charge ACS, industry and mines department, when contacted said the state government is in discussions with Tesla and has assured the company all possible assistance and incentives for setting up base in Gujarat.

“The world’s top most automobile companies have set up manufacturing plants in the state, which has become an automobile hub with key MSME players supporting large companies. Major electric car manufacturers and vehicle battery manufacturers are setting up facilities in Gujarat. We are hopeful that like other global automakers, Tesla will prefer Gujarat,” the official said.

According to Prabhu Ram, head of the industry intelligence group (IIG), CMR, Tesla’s bold bet on India will supercharge and transform the country’s mobility future. “Over the short-term, Tesla’s entry will give a boost to the government’s policy initiatives, strengthen EV manufacturing in India, spur new mobility startups, and most importantly, hasten development of enabling EV infrastructure,” Ram said.

There were talks of Tesla doing a JV with Tata Motors, that would be a better route to penetrate the market in its nascent stage than setting up shop from beginning.

I doubt it. They already have a factory in neighbouring China. It makes no sense to make such a large investment for minuscule benefits. If they were to set up another factory, it would be in Europe which is a big market for them.

Could be very much true, Reuters claims to have seen a government document confirming this move. This article also mentions that the statement was part of a broader document outlining the highlights of India’s budget to its people in the Kannada language.

Tesla steps up recruitment in India, looks to fill senior level roles

Electric carmaker Tesla Inc has ramped its recruitment drive in India and is looking to fill some senior roles as it aims to start its business operations in the world’s biggest emerging car markets.

I am also a fan of Tesla and did pre-book the model 3 when it was made available in India, However, I am not for the Govt. to make an exception for Tesla for the import duty. The Import Duty is there for a reason, to prevent dumping of cars and destroy the local manufacturing, and I don't see a reason why Musk should be given an exception.
He is not doing Philanthropy here, he is here to make money and if he thinks that India is going to be a big market, he can start by setting up an assembly plant here and assemble the car like Hyundai and MG have done.

Tesla Power USA is essentially a US based battery manufacturer who is now entering into the electric two-wheeler space in our market.

The EV maker has leased out the production of its upcoming electric scooters to a Ludhiana based manufacturer and has confirmed that around 80 per cent of production will be localised while the remaining 20 per cent parts will be imported from nations India has friendly relations with. The company is also planning to expand the sales of its electric scooters to 15 other countries in 2022 and these scooters will be exported from India itself. Tesla Power USA is first targeting exporting to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Elon Musk is hunting for new Asian production hubs for his EVs. Indonesia looks like the clear winner, while India appears to have missed the boat.

After lobbying against India’s tight policies around manufacturing and prohibitive import duties, Musk is headed to meet Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo and visit several areas across the country, which is also the top producer of nickel, a key metal for batteries. That’s an astute bet — for Tesla and Indonesia. And a missed opportunity for New Delhi.

To meet ambitious electric vehicle targets, Indonesia has drawn in several battery and car manufacturers in recent months with a variety of incentives. Government ministers say they hope to have investment across the supply chain.

With a friendly policy bolstering the country’s EV goals, manufacturers have started committing billions of dollars. LG Energy Solution, along with other companies, is investing about $9 billion to set up a supply chain — from mining to manufacturing — in the country

Tesla knows this well. It has created large manufacturing hubs in China and now Germany — countries known for their prowess in industrial production and policies that will help sell its cars. After having trouble making EVs in the US, its market share has grown globally. Now the company is looking to secure materials and make its own batteries, while stopping short of buying mines and getting into a new business. Wherever Musk sees problems in the production process, he looks for a solution. Tesla is essentially creating discrete supply chains across the globe.

Now, there are questions around whether Tesla will make its way into India at all, given all the roadblocks.

This company has nothing to do with the company led by Elon Musk. They seem to be riding the wave created by misappropriation of the Tesla name.
