Volvo cars to be fully electric by 2030 | Wants to sell EVs only online

Volvo just announced that they will sell only full-electric cars from 2030 and phase out any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.

Volvo Cars’ move towards full electrification comes together with an increased focus on online sales and a more complete, attractive and transparent consumer offer under the name Care by Volvo. All fully electric models will be available online only.

In coming years Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models, with more to follow. Already by 2025, it aims for 50 per cent of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, every car it sells should be fully electric.

“There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer. “We are firmly committed to becoming an electric-only car maker and the transition should happen by 2030. It will allow us to meet the expectations of our customers and be a part of the solution when it comes to fighting climate change.”

Whole heartedly support this policy announcement by Volvo. Given Volvo's focus on safety we can be sure they will do their homework on battery for safety aspects.

Great move.

The XC40 Recharge is in my short list for my next upgrade - the reviews have been extremely positive, though the Tesla Y is usually identified as the leader in most. If they could only bring the Polestar sub-brand here, they'd really take the fight to Tesla, not to mention the German threesome, on the electric SUV front.

Seems like everyone is now waking up. With Jaguar setting the date to 2025 and now Volvo to 2030, these guys have realized that the Tesla route is the way to go ! Expecting more premium players to set their deadlines for an all electric line up.

The devil's in the detail - "electric cars to be sold online only", are they phasing out the dealership model to adapt to the times just like Tesla?

Nice eye & good catch ! Was easier for Tesla because they started from scratch, but will be impossible for Volvo to dump its dealer network the world over. Volvo will have to go for a "hybrid" model where it controls the online configuration + booking + sales experience, and will use the dealer primarily for test drives + delivery + servicing. Manufacturers like Volvo can also open company-owned outlets, but they will have to coexist with the existing dealer network.

Here's the full note on Volvo's online aspirations:

Quote:
Volvo Cars is fundamentally changing how and where to meet its customers, and will transform the current wholesale model by moving online and with strong customer relationships.

It aims to be a fully electric car company globally by 2030 and will launch a completely new family of electric cars in coming years – all of which will be available online only.

As part of its new commercial strategy, Volvo Cars will invest heavily in its online sales channels, radically reduce complexity in its product offer, and with transparent and set pricing models.

Combined with online sales, Volvo Cars will focus on a complete convenient customer offering, all under the Care by Volvo name.

“The future of Volvo Cars is defined by three pillars: electric, online and growth,” says Lex Kerssemakers, head of global commercial operations. “We want to offer our customers peace of mind and a care-free way of having a Volvo, by taking away complexity while getting and driving the car. Simplification and convenience are key to everything we do.”

The strategy is focused on the fastest-growing segment in the global car industry: the premium electric market. Volvo Cars is committed to becoming a leader in this segment and will focus on developing electric cars only going forward.

While Volvo Cars is investing heavily in online sales platforms, it will build stronger customer relationships together with its retail partners. They remain a crucial part of the customer experience and will continue to be responsible for a variety of important services such as selling, preparing, delivering and servicing cars.

“Online and off-line need to be fully and seamlessly integrated,” added Lex Kerssemakers. “Wherever the customer is in their journey – online, in a showroom, in a Volvo Studio, or driving the car – the customer experience needs to be top-notch.”

Care by Volvo, until recently known as the name for Volvo Cars’ subscription service, will be expanded into a broader customer offer aimed at increasing overall convenience.

When buying an electric Volvo online, it will come with a convenient care package that includes items such as service, warranty, roadside assistance, as well as insurance where available and home charging options.

On its flagship online store, volvocars.com, the company will radically simplify the process for, and reduce the number of steps involved in, signing up for an electric Volvo.

Customers will be able to choose from attractive pre-configured electric Volvos that are ready for simple and convenient ordering and quick delivery.

Further convenience and simplification comes through transparent and set pricing models. This eliminates the need for negotiations, increases transparency and builds trust.

Re: Volvo cars to be fully electric by 2030 | Wants to sell EVs only online

Very welcome move from Volvo to go all electric in 2030. I have a very good confidence that Volvo can pull this off. Just like they promised to not sell any diesel cars after 2023, they already stopped diesels completely here in the Netherlands. At this time of post, I can't book/buy a new volvo with a diesel engine here.

I would be glad to see the same phasing out of fossil fuelled engines in 2030 completely. Kudos to Volvo

Online sales model is indeed going to be supported by experience centers and service centers. For a customer, this is more than enough. As a customer, I want to physically see, feel and test drive the car before buying and need to bring it to a service center for periodic service. I don't need much more than that. I don't see a point in having large dealerships with hundreds / thousands of cars in their stockyard piling up dust.

Volvo targets 621-mile EV range by 2030 as part of tech focus.

Quote:
Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson has unveiled plans for the firm to become a leader in the premium electric car market.

It’s about electrification, and that requires that we build in-house new technologies, such as batteries: we can’t just buy that and rely on a relationship with a supplier,” said Samuelsson

Re: Volvo cars to be fully electric by 2030 | Wants to sell EVs only online

VOLVO patents 14 new model names,

Volvo cars to be fully electric by 2030 | Wants to sell EVs only online-capture.jpg

Car manufacturer Volvo registered no less than fourteen new model names in July 2022.

They are:
Ex30/Ev40/ES40/Ex40/EXC40/EC40/Ev60/ES60/Ex60/EXC60/EV90/ES90/EX90/EXC90

Name: volvoelectricosfiltracion2022899711663845151_3.jpg

Volvo at least wants to stick to the number series 40, 60 and 90. And the EX30 also stands out.
Will that be the name of a future entry-level Volvo model?
The ES40, ES60 and ES90 look like sedans, while the EV40, EV60 and EV90 belong to estates.
The designations EX30, EX40, EX60, EX90, EXC40, EXC60 and EXC90 belong on crossovers / SUVs.
It is expected that successors to the current models will have a slightly different name, for example with an addition 'E'. This may indicate electric versions.
That would not be surprising, because Volvo will only offer fully electric models from 2030. By then, all Volvo cars with combustion engines will be phased out of the global portfolio, including models with hybrid technology. Volvo becomes fully electric.

- The small all electric B-SUV known as XC20 is transformed into the EX30,
- The ES40 and EV40. The first a sedan and the second a traditional compact or with a more familiar style. The SUVs will wear the insignia of EX40 and EXC40.
- The D and E segments will also feature the ES60, EV60, EX60 and EXC60, which means that the brand will retain the current structure and that it will not give up the more familiar body either.
- In the high range, the new EX90 will be joined by the ES90, EV90 and EXC90.

The brand will use two platforms, the "SEA" of Geely's Asians for the little ones and these eight largest ones will be created in the "SPA 2", equipped with powerful batteries that, in the case of the most luxurious, will offer up to 700 kilometers of autonomy.

In the coming years, Volvo will introduce more electric models. The brand aims for no less than 50 percent of global sales to consist of fully electric cars by 2025 and the rest of them are partly electric cars (plug-in hybrid or hybrid).

By 2030, every new car that leaves the showroom must be fully electric.

A car manufacturer also tries to claim names in this way, so that other brands can not get away with it. So maybe these new names will adorn new Volvo models in the future, but maybe not.

Re: Volvo cars to be fully electric by 2030 | Wants to sell EVs only online

The Volvo ES90 is coming, the Swedish brand's first luxury electric sedan will arrive in 2025 with +600 km of range.

The future Volvo ES90 will be a global production model, so it will not only go on sale in China or Europe, but will also bet on the United States and other markets. Information indicates that the new zero-emission sedan will go into production from May 2024, so the delivery of the first units scheduled for mid-2025 is more than feasible.

Quote:
The graphic document also reveals part of the performance and technical specifications of an electric model that is also based on the SPA2 platform. It is known that there will be versions of one and two electric motors, all powered by a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 111 kWh, which comes to a net usable of 107 kWh. Enough to provide energy for a range of more than 600 kilometres.
