Re: BYD e6 electric MPV, now launched at Rs 29.15 lakh

Autocar review for BYD E6 EV MPV.

It looks well put together and the range is impressive. One interesting bit is that it can take DC charging throughout its lifetime. For other EVs, you are supposed to use DC fast charging only on occasions where AC charging is not available since there is an impact on battery degradation.

Can't help think that adding a third row would have made a big difference to its value proposition. Anyway, it is commercial-only at this point. So nothing for us private owners to cheer.

An interesting product but most commercial cars do see a lot of highway action and this could be a deterrent. I don't think a lot of Innovas running around in cities (pilot/hostess pickup drop to airports, resort/hotel owned etc) strictly stay in cities all the time.

Spotted one near my cousins house a few days back. Design looked impressively proportionate in person!

Here's a short video from my dash cam.

It can take DC fast charging because it uses lifep04 batteries. These can charge and discharge at faster rates then average off the shelf li-on cell and also has superior cycle life, typically in excess of 2000 cycles at which point its capacity drops by upto 30% or in this case one needs to drive 6 lakh km for the battery to reach that stage. BYD use the same cell chemistry in their buses.

Would this turn out to be a historic moment in taking the fight to the Innova camp or even wipe them out in 10 years? I know it's a far fetched thought, but a possibility. Toyota tying up with BYD for EV tech is an irony of sorts.

The per km running cost is 1.5 Rs as against 8-9 Rs for Innova. Cab operators can break even pretty soon after spending 27 lakhs, provided they clock lot of miles everyday. There are chinks in the armour too, the power output with 5 onboard would be really sluggish. It has just 95 HP, 180 Nm. This would play out more if the car travels to the hills.

Even with these drawbacks its still a pretty large addressable market and I am sure they know it. Think of all the BPO/ Contact Center transport fleet. I know our fleets average run used to 200+ Km every day for 70% of the fleet and 400+ km for 10% of the fleet- that too in a smallish city like Hyderabad. Include hotels (airport runs), airport cabs, city office<-> factory run cars and its quite a lucrative niche where the Innova reigns supreme.

Who would have though that the market leader will suddenly face a real threat from such an unlikely source.

Maybe not. Remember the 180Nm is available from standstill because of the electric motor. Maybe that will not make it sluggish at all. Cant say how that will pan out in the hills though.

I'm sure cabbies have been using the trusted Qualis and Innova with less than and barely 100hp respectively since eternity. I'm sure 95hp, that too from standstill with an electric motor will make this certainly a competent car, and not sluggish.

Re: BYD e6 electric MPV, now launched at Rs 29.15 lakh

Here is an interview with BYD Sales Head for Maharastra, Goa, and Delhi where he claims that it is now available for personal ownership booking too [at around 12 min in the video].

And here is a long drive review from the same channel, where they claim that it easily does 500 km with AC and normal highway driving.
