Focused Ford plans 9 electric cars based on 2 EV platforms

Ford is reported to be investing large amounts towards the development of EVs for the future. According to a media report, the American car brand is developing two new dedicated EV platforms, which will be introduced by 2025.

Of the two EV platforms, one will be dedicated for trucks and large SUVs, while the second will be used for passenger cars and small SUVs. The two new EV architectures will form the basis of all future electric models from Ford.

The two architectures are also expected to help Ford bring down manufacturing costs and reduce expenses while transitioning towards electric mobility. This will be achieved through the sharing of components, batteries and motors between various models, using the same EV platforms.

There are reports that Ford is said to be planning on introducing nine new electric vehicles. These are said to include passenger cars, small SUVs and at least three trucks, vans and large SUVs.

Ford is yet to make an official statement of its electrification plans. However, reports do suggest the company will make the announcement very soon.

re: Focused Ford plans 9 electric cars based on 2 EV platforms

A step in the right direction! It's great that Ford is pushing for EV in a quick timeframe and a mainstream carmaker aggressively pushing EV is going to drive the competition as well to bring out EV's. I hope Ford cascades all these developments to the Indian market as well. The best combo would be a minimum of 500km range+ quick charging (max 45-60 min) + 200,000 km or 8 years warranty on the battery pack. As maintenance will be almost nil on EV's it's a win win

Exciting times ahead in the EV space.

When I look at Ford's portfolio, I see big dollops of sensibility. They have shrunk their car portfolio and are only churning out winners like the Mustang, F150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Explorer etc. It's better to sell 8 segment-best products rather than 25 mediocre cars like Nissan or Chrysler. I don't agree with Ford exiting the compact car space, but man, the focus on a slimmer range is showing & how!

Really excited about Ford's EV plans. Just hope the company eventually launches the EV models outside of the US. If the F-150 EV is a tease of what's to come, the future looks promising for Ford.

Very true. There are also some added benefits of such an approach. Success begets success and supports a superior impression too. When you have 8 segment best products, you are much more likely seen as a “successful” brand without the image being clouded with 15 other mediocre products.

Secondly, it allows overall management focus also to be much more targeted to making those products a success rather than distracted and diversified.

I do hope (for our sake) they continue their presence in India and what this new shape of Ford will hold in store for us.

Ford's first VW-based EV to be US-flavoured crossover.

Quote:
The landmark car-making tie-up between Ford and Volkswagen will begin to bear fruit in 2023, when the US manufacturer kick-starts its bold European EV offensive with a locally produced and regionally focused crossover to sit beneath the Mustang Mach-E.
Quote:
The new crossover will be the first Ford to use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB EV platform, as part of a long-term strategic partnership between the two firms that will also result in Ford building commercial vehicles for the German brand.
Quote:
the new Ford will share the bulk of its underpinnings with Volkswagen’s ID 4 crossover, rather than its shorter ID 3 hatchback, which paves the way for a line-up comprising a wide variety of battery capacities, power outputs and driveline layouts.
Quote:
The Ford crossover, which is set for a reveal in the first half of 2022 before its 2023 market introduction, will adopt a similar low-slung, two-box silhouette to its Zwickau-built sibling
Quote:
From 2023, all Ford vehicles will be fitted with an Android-based infotainment system, and the Cologne-built crossover is likely to be among the first to feature this.
Quote:
In terms of powertrains, the new Ford is set to follow the ID 4 in offering both rear- and four-wheel-drive formats, with power output ranging from 146bhp to 201bhp in the standard model. The line-up could then be topped by a 295bhp sports model, possibly badged GT, as with the most powerful version of the Mach-E.

A 52kWh lithium ion battery will provide around 213 miles of range as standard and offer charging rates of up to 100kW, while the optional 77kWh battery will extend the range to more than 300 miles and raise charging capacity to 125kW.

Re: Focused Ford plans 9 electric cars based on 2 EV platforms

Ford's new electric crossover, and cousin of the Volkswagen ID.4 spied.

Quote:
The first tests of Ford's new electric crossover have started. The prototypes of this model of unknown name have rolled, and which you can see in these very first spy photos. Hunted inside the facilities of the blue oval brand in Europe, it is one of the great novelties of the firm for 2024.

One of Ford's new electric models for Europe has been surprised in its first tests inside one of the brand's facilities in Europe. A zero-emission crossover, whose name is unknown for now, but which will occupy the gap left by the Mondeo, and which we had already seen last year in a model unloading from a car carrier.

Re: Focused Ford plans 9 electric cars based on 2 EV platforms

I am not sure of the price point of this car or whether Ford will ever think of bringing this in India. But seem to be as one of the best looking EVs of my taste and very close to the Tata Sierra in terms of aspiration and beauty.

Here is the walkaround video of the Car and also of the cutouts of the interiors

Re: Focused Ford plans 9 electric cars based on 2 EV platforms

Ford cuts EV investment after losing $36,000 on every EV sold in Q3.

After posting a $1.3 billion loss in Q3, Ford's Model e EV unit said it would cut Mustang Mach-E production and delay a battery plant.

Quote:
The carmaker's EV deliveries increased by 44 percent, leading to a 26 percent growth year-over-year in revenue to $1.8 billion for the Ford Model e EV unit.

Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends for Ford's EV business. Despite the higher volume, EV losses continued to rise in the third quarter, with the company posting an operating loss of $1.3 billion, up from $1.1 billion in the previous quarter and more than double its loss from Q3 2022.

This means that Ford lost around $36,000 for every electric vehicle it sold in the quarter, surpassing its estimated $32,350 loss per EV in the second quarter. For the entire year, the carmaker expects a full-year loss of $4.5 billion for its EV unit.
Further pressure will be put on Ford's costs by the tentative agreement with the UAW that includes a 25 percent wage increase for 57,000 workers over a span of five years. Ford expects the new contract to add $850 to $900 in labor cost per vehicle.

Ford estimated that the UAW's 41-day strike resulted in lost production of 80,000 vehicles and cost it $1.3 billion, effectively wiping out $1.2 billion in third-quarter income.

Ford hits EV brakes delaying pickup and SUV, shifts to hybrids.

Ford's next-gen electric pickup will now come out in 2026, and its three-row EV will arrive in 2027.

Quote:
Ford has postponed the launch of its next-gen electric pickup truck (originally planned for 2025) to 2026, and a three-row electric SUV (from 2025) to 2027.

The automaker says it is prioritizing offering hybrid versions for all internal combustion engine vehicles in its lineup.

CEO Jim Farley emphasized using capital wisely and bringing vehicles to market at the right time for profitability.
