The Tesla Model S Plaid is said to have set a new quarter-mile world record. According to a media report, the electric sedan from Tesla is said to have recorded a quarter-mile time of 9.247 seconds with a 0 - 100 km/h acceleration time of under 2 seconds.



The record attempt was conducted on May 11 at the Autoclub Famoso Raceway, Bakersfield, California, USA. However, the quarter-mile time was considered to be just a rumour at that time. Now, reports suggest that Jay Leno, television host and comedian has confirmed the details.



Jay Leno who is said to have been present at the raceway during the record run confirmed in a radio show that the Tesla Model S Plaid did achieve the world record time. He even confirmed that there was a member of NHRA to make the quarter-mile time official. As per Jay Leno, the Tesla Model S completed the quarter-mile in 9.2 seconds at 152 mph.



If these numbers are to be believed, then it makes the Tesla Model S Plaid the fastest production car in the world. The electric sedan beats the previous record of 9.4 seconds, set by the Bugatti Chiron Sport.



Tesla themselves, however, are yet to reveal the official figures of the Model S Plaid. The company is expected to announce these numbers at the time of deliveries, which is expected in the coming days.

I was just checking the Tesla website and it looks like they have already updated the quarter-mile run details.

This spot is going to be quickly taken over by the Rimac Nevera.

Carwow's Matt Watson did a 8.62 second 1/4-mile time in one of the runs in his video, with Matte Rimac the Rimac founder himself congratulating the host for setting an "unofficial" World Record 1/4-mile time for a production car.

The Tesla does offer unmatchable performance for the type of money you pay for it. That being said, the Rimac is in an entirely different league when compared to the Tesla. Not only is almost 0.6 seconds faster in the quarter mile (which is a lot in drag races) but it's trap speed at the 1/4 mile mark is over 175mph compared to the mid 150s which the Model S. The Nevera also tops out over 410kmph. And that is fair too considering that Model S Plad is a super sedan whereas the Rimac is an out and out hypercar which bests the Chiron's and the Regera's/Agera's of the world in most performance parameters.

Yes, this comparison is not fair enough but can easily be compared with upcoming Roadster 2 with Cold Air thrusters (if it ever launch).

The car was race modified by Unplugged Performance and was Driven by Randy Pobst.This time, the track was cut short due to snow and ice at the full cirucit of 12.42 miles. The VW IDR holds the record for the full circuit at 7.57.148 .


It was also tried with the model 3, which crashed a while ago.
