Mazda MX-5 might have an electric powertrain According to this motor1 article Mazda might electrify the powertrain of MX-5 fully or partially for the future generation models. Quote:
"Mazda is seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in an effort to have all models feature a form of electrification by 2030. We will work hard to make it a lightweight, affordable, open two-seater sports car in order to meet the needs of customers."

MX-5 ND in it's current incarnation is one of those rare roadsters you can buy new, which
- is less than 1000kgs
- has NA engine which redlines at 7500rpm
- has Double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension
- has a Front-mid engine RWD
- is reliable, durable and fuel efficient
There is no other drop top roadster you can buy at the price point of an MX-5 with all the above properties. I, for one, have been longing for such lightweight electric roadsters to bring back the joy of driving on country roads of yesteryear British roadsters. Hope Mazda finds their way to electrify MX-5.
PS: There have been some aftermarket conversions of the first generation (NA) MX-5 to electric and also the weight was lower than 1000kgs. If aftermarket companies can do, I think Mazda can as well. One such aftermarket conversion with detailed specs.
