Volkswagen has announced that the company will discontinue the sales of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles in Europe, between 2033 and 2035. According to a media report, the company will offer a 100% EV product line-up in the European market, from 2035 onwards.



Klaus Zellmer, Board Member, Sales & Marketing, Volkswagen confirmed that the company will discontinue its combustion engine models in Europe between 2033 and 2035, while the USA and Chinese markets will follow later.

Volkswagen aims to have up to 70% of its total European car sales coming from its battery-electric vehicles by 2030 - 10% more than prescribed by the European Commission.

The company is also looking at employing different strategies, based on market requirements. Volkswagen could adopt different buying methods to further boost electric vehicle sales as well. One such method is via the introduction of subscription services, which the company will be offering on the ID.3. Volkswagen hopes that non-traditional buying methods will account for 20% of sales by 2030.

Having said that, Zellmer also mentioned that the company is still committed to continuing its development of internal combustion engines, which still have a high demand.

VW definitely is still going slow when it comes to electrifying their stable. For a manufacturer of their size, I would have expected a figure closer to 2030 across all ops.

Coincidentally at the time of opening this post, there was another post on our forum which stated "Tata to add 10 EVs to their portfolio by 2025". Not meaning to undermine the great efforts by Tata but if Tata can add EVs of immaculate quality at such a high speed then a considerably larger like VW can attain similar levels too (if not better).

Regardless, it is great for us petrolheads to be witness to a monumental transition (a change of an era if you will).

Germany Pushes Back On 2035 Combustion Engine Ban Proposal.

Minister of Transport, Volker Wissing:

We want to allow combustion engines even after 2035

only if the cars can be powered exclusively with synthetic fuels.

Synthetic fuels are potentially compatible with traditional vehicles and would allow them to stay on the road in the years to come while still achieving a reduction in emissions. The German minister is therefore sure that there is "a solution to ensure that cars are not refueled with fuels derived from fossil fuels."

As a side note, just yesterday, Audi announced its diesel V6 engines can now run on renewable fuels, reducing CO2 emissions by a whopping 70 to 95 percent.

The idea of ​​an "intermediate" solution to achieve complete decarbonization seems to be echoing the words of Italy's minister of ecological transition.

Volkswagen Group To Axe 60 Percent Of Combustion Cars By 2030.

VAG wants quality over quantity. And higher profit margins, of course.

With more and more EVs coming out, it makes sense the company is effectively signaling the beginning of the end for gasoline- and diesel-fueled cars.

There will be far fewer ICE-powered VAGs to choose from by 2030, and hopefully, the decision to move upmarket will be reflected not just in the asking price, but in the product's quality as well. Due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations, the most vulnerable conventional engines are the large-displacement units, which is why the W12 is going away until the end of the decade.

By going down this road, the VW Group will likely abandon the race for the world's biggest car manufacturer by volume.

Volkswagen to axe petrol and diesel engines in Europe by 2033.

Volkswagen – the main brand of the world’s second-largest car-maker – is going electric-only in Europe by 2033, but petrol and diesel power is expected to remain in the US, China and Australia well into the next decade.

Now recently-appointed Volkswagen passenger cars CEO Thomas Schafer has confirmed the car-maker will only sell electric cars in Europe by 2033 – two years before the European Union plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

It is understood Volkswagen will continue to produce petrol and diesel-powered cars for major markets such as the US and China – as well as Australia – beyond 2033.

The 2033 end-date for petrol and diesel car sales in Europe is shared with fellow Volkswagen Group brand Audi, which announced its plans to go electric-only in all markets (excluding China) last year.
