Ford Mustang Mach-E sets new Guinness World Record for EV Efficiency with 10.7 km / kWh

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has set a new Guinness World Record for EV efficiency. The electric SUV averaged 10.7 km per kWh on a 1,777 km journey from John O' Groats to Land's End in the UK.

The record attempt took place on July 3. The electric SUV was driven by three BBC transport correspondents - Paul Clifton, Fergal McGrath and Kevin Brooker, who also hold the world records for petrol and diesel efficiency between them.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E was driven at a consistent pace of 50 km/h and the entire journey was completed in 27 hours. The Mach-E was charged only twice during the attempt, spending a combined time of 45 minutes being plugged in.

The Mach-E used in the world record run is a rear-wheel-drive extended range version. It comes powered by an 88 kWh battery pack. While the Ford Mustang Mach-E has an official 621 km range (WLTP cycle), the effective range during the attempt was boosted to more than 800 km, by driving conservatively.

Just to give a perspective, below are the most efficient EVs on sale today.

A quick mathematics give us the figure of 6.66 Km Per Kwh for the most efficient model 3.

What the Mach-E has managed to achieve, is a staggering 50% more efficiency.

Re: Ford Mustang Mach-E sets new Guinness World Record for EV Efficiency with 10.7 km / kWh

As I keep saying, nothing has changed. It was quite an effort to get double digit FE from the IC engine cars and I see it's the same thing with EVs.

A question that was valid before, valid today and will remain valid in the future:

"Kitna deti hai? Kam se kam 10 to deti hai kya?

This is not an apples to apples comparison, because the Mach-E trip seems to have been a hypermiling event, where they try to eek every bit of energy out of the car as efficiently as possible. The Tesla efficiency numbers quoted are the EPA ratings, and not necessarily what it can achieve in the most ideal of conditions.

Take for example the event described in this link - https://electrek.co/2018/05/27/tesla...miling-record/ .
A rough calculation based on the numbers on the article and in the photos generates a number of 14.62 km/kWh. That is ridiculous, and a staggering almost 50% more than what the Mach-E achieved.

Sounds similar to the time when a Ford Fiesta Diesel supposedly gave 45kmpl, on a mileage drive. The figure doesn't help in any way, except marketing the car. Real world usage and results are entirely different.

Here's Honda Jazz getting 95mpg (~39kmpl) world record, driven by Paul Cliffton.

Re: Ford Mustang Mach-E sets new Guinness World Record for EV Efficiency with 10.7 km / kWh

Nice, 10.7KM/KWH consistently is very good. Meanwhile Autocar had driven for records, sponsored by MG with a ZS EV which clocked about claimed 563KM in a single charge, averaging about 12.7KM/KWH. Guinness world record guys must consult FMSCI and the India Book of Records officials ASAP, if they are not aware of this AUTOCAR record.

Also our humble ARAI has a record to rate EVs at good efficiency comparable to this record.

*NEXON EV - 10.3 KM/KWH (312 KM)
*KONA EV - 11.5 KM/KWH(452 KM)
*MG ZS EV - 7.77 KM/KWH (350 KM)/ 9.13 KM/KWH (419 KM by iCAT).

Because in real life we all drive at 50kph tops without air conditioning and hyper miling. Here's the EPA efficiency for Mach-E, the same one you referred for Model 3. Not that staggering now is it?

Yes, I do understand my folly.
I did not expect such a drastic difference in efficiency in EVs in actual scenarios vs 'Mileage' runs.

Re: Ford Mustang Mach-E sets new Guinness World Record for EV Efficiency with 10.7 km / kWh

Recently a lot of efficiency drives seems to be taking place in both the EV world as well the hydrogen ones. Seems like there is a mild battle taking place to prove to the customers which of the two would be the King. As of now EVs are far ahead in terms of adoption as well as usage.

Setting off on 3 July and driving through the night to avoid congestion, the trio completed the trip in 27 hours at an average speed of around 31mph.

These kind of efficiency drives should be taken in real work conditions such as family of four during daytime using air conditioner with groceries. Also use suitable road speeds for such runs. Also why not do a mix of average driving during daytime within city limits ? That would give real world statistics instead of these useless results.

No offense and sorry for going off topic, but our ARAI range tests are a joke. Knowing them closely, their way of range test for EVs are very poor when compared to EPA or WLTP.

Nexon EV range is one best example where TATA themselves said the numbers are not from them, but ARAI when the recent legal issues they faced in Delhi.

EPA should not be used for comparison of EV range. Tesla gets an unfair advantage on EPA.

Edmunds conducted a test on a closed circuit at a constant speed and published the results and it shows they don't meet the EPA range.

https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/ele...s-edmunds.html

You can see that most of the EV's other than Tesla beat EPA range while not even one Tesla could meet.

Here is an interesting write up on car and driver on the advantage it gets on EPA.
