Scoop! Previous-gen BYD e6 electric MPV spotted in India

China-based BYD has been testing its 'e6' electric MPV in India for quite some time. We have now received images of the previous generation e6, which was recently spotted in Chennai.

This generation of the BYD e6 does look quite outdated, compared to the new model. It has a boxy exterior that reminds us of the Land Rover Freelander, while the rear seems to be inspired by the Toyota Celica.

Grey plastics adorn the interior. The instrument cluster is located in the centre, which unfortunately is hidden by the shadow. The centre console looks oddly similar to that of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

This version of the BYD e6 uses a 120 hp electric motor. It is powered by an 80 kWh battery that is said to offer a maximum range of 400 km.

What abomination is this?
Also are they going to manufacture in India? Otherwise these will be priced through the roof.
Does anyone have any experience with BYD(Build Your Dreams) cars? How is the build quality, reliability, driving dynamics and stuff?

Re: Scoop! Previous-gen BYD e6 electric MPV spotted in India

The reason they have picked a dated model is to keep costs low. The model cycle is complete and costs recouped, BYD can minimise investments when using this for a new market.

The car did good volumes as thousands were largely sold as electric taxis in china. Even if it's an import and despite the duties, BYD can price this competitively in India. Or even better simply assembling locally as well.

This is my fear, the Indian market being a dumping ground for chinese makers. Just look at the Indian electric two wheeler sector, small scale operations popping up all across the country assembling chinese electric two wheeler kits.

Hoping the government takes notice.

My biggest gripe with Chinese cars and bikes? They all scream "I'm made in China".
I fear the day when hideous, cheap 4 wheeled EVs start plying our roads. The 2 wheelers have already made their presence even in small towns and villages. God save us.

Re: Scoop! Previous-gen BYD e6 electric MPV spotted in India

The model might be outdated but it's an electric vehicle which is the future unlike Volkswagen which sells the outdated Polo running on fuel. Instead of blaming them, we should be happy that they are bringing affordable EVs. How many of us can afford newer electric cars like Hyundai Kona, Nissan Leaf, Model S, etc? If it's new, we blame them for being expensive. If it's less expensive, we blame them for being old! We have to change this mentality till the time EVs become normal as IC vehicles.

Spotted a BYD car going out of our apartment complex today. Will check my dashcam if it’s visible is some proportion.
