Electric F150 truck is a success; Ford to double its production

Ford is planning to double the production of its recently unveiled F-150 Lightning electric truck. According to a media report, the decision to increase the production targets is because of the strong demand for the electric truck, from both retail and commercial customers.

Reports suggest that Ford has already received 120,000 reservations for the F-150 Lightning, ahead of its market launch in 2022. To meet the demand, Ford will ramp up the production number to 15,000 units next year, 55,000 vehicles in 2023 and 80,000 units in 2024.

Reports also stated that Ford is targeting a production capacity of 160,000 units in 2025 with their second-generation Lightning. This new model will be based on the brand's TE1 platform, unlike the current Lightning truck, which uses the same underpinnings as the standard F-150.

To achieve the increased production capacity, Ford will be investing $850 million - this is in addition to the $30 billion it would have already spent by 2025.

There are going to be a LOT of disappointed people next year if they're only making 15,000 units next year. The regular F150 sells about 70,000+ units PER MONTH.

Re: Electric F150 truck is a success; Ford to double its production

Ford Focus with a liquid cooled Lithium ion battery pack came out in 2011. Ford just did not want to scale, or could not scale. They made no deals for charging infrastructure, just let it flop.

The competition for F150 Lightning is huge. Rivian R1T, Cybertruck, Bollinger, Lordstown, GM Hummer, GM Silverado, Alpha Wolf to name a few.

I have a reservation for Cybertruck, I may flip to R1T. But a distant second preference would be Lightning, or the Silverado based on availability and reviews.

Re: Electric F150 truck is a success; Ford to double its production

So, the company received 120,000 bookings and production capacity will only increase to 15,000 in 2022 and 55,000 in 2023. Assuming half of the bookings does materialise, it will be quite a wait for most who booked. Add to the wait period, the company also teases the second generation F150 electric for 2025. Not even sure what strategy this is from Ford and it looks like it won't be worth the waiting time and if users do end up cancelling the reservations, would they then cancel/delay the second gen product?

That name (F-150) alone has the power to pull in hoards of buyers into the showrooms. I feel in the near future the Lightning (in the truck world) will be what the Model 3 is in the small luxury sedan space.

And why would anyone continue to wait, if there are other options available? Ford is still tied to the dealer network, and one can only buy what the dealers have ordered, and is available on their lot.

I had been looking at F150 and the Ranger for a year. Dealers only like to order the crew cab with the shorter bed, as they are more popular. The 4x4 extended cab is hard to find and the dealer markup is huge, with the dealer ordered car already having a whole bunch of add ons - that I don't care about. The total cost is $60k for a gas burning F150, of whatever color vehicle the dealer is left with.

I really am tired of playing these games with dealers. I am sold on the direct to consumer model - configure your car/truck online, color/interiors, drivetrain, etc and the pay the price determined by the factory on that date. Waiting for a month is no problem, as long as I get my exact config.

A much-deserved success . This is the best-executed electric vehicle launch since the Teslas. Perfect pricing, packaging & branding. Tesla pushed the entire auto industry into moving toward electric, but Ford is the one that's taking the EV to the masses. Of course, we cannot deny the popularity of the fantastic Model 3 too, yet an electric F150 totally proves that EVs are the future of the car industry. The "F150" is currently the biggest franchise in the industry!

Ford F-150 Lightning Reservations exceed 160,000. That's some 10,000 more than in the previous note in mid-September when the electric F-150 entered the pre-production stage.
