Hyundai working on a new electric city car; unveil in 2023

Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is said to be working on introducing a new pure-electric city car in the next couple of years. According to a media report, BorgWarner - the electric powertrain partner for HMG has confirmed the development.

Reports suggest that the partnership between HMG and BorgWarner will result in an all-new pure-electric city car that could be launched under any of HMG's brands (Hyundai, Kia, Ioniq). However, the electric city car is most likely to receive either a Hyundai or Kia badging.

As per reports, the new pure-electric city car will enter production by mid-2023. It will come with a new integrated electric drive module from BorgWarner. This new module is said to combine the motor and gearbox into one bolt-in unit, saving both space and weight compared to a conventional electric drivetrain system.

While the electric powertrain is capable of offering a peak output of 181 BHP, Hyundai is expected to dial it back to around 100 BHP for the electric city car. Reports also suggest that the new electric city car could come with a 40 kWh battery pack, offering roughly around 200 miles (320 km) on a single charge. It is also said to use the same 400V architecture as the Kona electric, which could allow it to use a 50 kW DC fast-charger.

From the outlines, the left-most is a tall hatchback. Second from left is a compact hatchback, possibly a 3 door, maybe slightly larger than a Reva. The other vehicle/s are not clear.

These in my opinion are probably what we should be buying for our city commute. Small, and can seat 2 to 4 people, easy to maneuver and park. Need smaller parking slots.

Hopefully, by the time these are launched, we will have the mindset of at least a 2 car family.

Budget Hyundai electric car will occupy a similar space to the baby Hyundai i10, a European city car.

The budget-priced Hyundai city hatch is likely to be an SUV or crossover, as the South Korean car maker reacts to a growing European trend towards SUV bodies in baby cars.

The European target price for the new electric car is 20,000 Euros, a similar price point for future rivals from companies including Volkswagen, which could hurt its chances locally.

The first step is to use completely knocked-down units or completely built-up imports like the Ioniq 5 and the Kona Electric; the second step is where it will develop an internal combustion engine platform-derived EV, which is where the Creta EV fits in; and lastly, a complete localisation of E-GMP platform, which will be used for India and global markets.

Hyundai Casper EV in Europe:

Quote:
A prototype last fall that was nabbed in Europe, and it obviously featured an EV powertrain, given the charging port located in the middle of the front bumper and the lack of tailpipes
Quote:
Expect the Hyundai Casper EV to debut later this year or perhaps in early 2025, and besides Europe, where it is expected to have a sub-€20k (~$21,500) starting price, it might also launch in Australia.
