BMW plans to enter the Indian EV space with two models in 2022

BMW India will launch EVs in 2022, lower import duty crucial to build critical scale.

Between this year and 2023, BMW will launch 25 electrified products globally. At least two of them, the fully electric iX and i4, will be introduced in India next year.

Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India said, We'll bring it (EV) in, no doubt about it, but the time and volume will depend on the infrastructure and the policies,”
BMW India is also open to local assembly of EVs at its Chennai plant if a favourable level of demand is reached in the market.

We are already manufacturing in India. We will invest in India, but allow us to create the demand for electric vehicles; then we'll bring in the latest technology
According to the company lower import duties could create the scale necessary for local assembly of EVs.

Re: BMW plans to enter the Indian EV space with two models in 2022

Like other relatively smaller & independent manufacturers (including Honda), BMW has fallen behind in the EV race. Their R&D & technology is nowhere near even VAG or Mercedes, forget Tesla. Smaller brands like BMW & Honda don't have resources to waste & have to contemplate a lot more before committing to a new tech.

Now that the big money is on EVs, everyone has no choice but to follow. Even anti-EV Toyota.

Re: BMW plans to enter the Indian EV space with two models in 2022

I wonder what likely brands and type of products we can hope to see in the INR 35 - 75 lakh EV space of premium sedans and SUVs in the next 3 - 4 years maybe. Will it be a range from Hyundai/Kia, VAG, [Honda/Toyota?], some Chinese like MG - moving up to Volvo and Tesla? Anyone else?

Even the XC40, which is already about 50L is likely to get its EV at almost a 15L premium from rumblings that I heard. It’s already a pretty tiny car at 50L on road - to pay a whopping 65L for an EV that size is going to hurt.

Wonder what other options then from the non - halo’d Germans. Perhaps VAG can lead that charge (no pun intended) with relatively more reliable and well made products (given it should no longer have DSG and other complex mechanical gizmodry which they struggle with).

Such ugly pig faces. EVs provide for so much creative room and BMW comes up with this?

Wonder what the aerodynamics and drag is like on these ugly pigs.

Re: BMW plans to enter the Indian EV space with two models in 2022

BMW had the first mover advantage with the i3 but then they never took it forward. They sacked the entire team there.

I wonder if these EV are good because 1. that grille and BMW stubbornness about it is just disappointing, if I could afford one I would never buy it just due to that grille. 2. the range and the technology doesnt seem to be anything substantial.

The only saving grace would be a reasonable price but with the latest price launches of BMW India I have lost that hope too from them. From what the BMW dealer has told me is that they will cost upwards of 1 cr.

Expect these BMW models to be atleast 1-1.5cr too. They're usually priced almost exactly 2x of their prices in the UK. And in this case the i4 is £51,000 which is about 50 lakhs, and the ix is £70,000 which is about 70 lakhs.

That thing is simply hideous.

Just can't digest the way it looks. That grill reminds me of Hitler's moustache! How did the design team okay this.

Have to appreciate Jaguar and Tesla for making beautiful ev's.

Is BMW serious about putting this grill on this vehicle??

With such hideous looks, completely omitted the tech specs of the vehicle! BMW is surely losing the plot.
