Suzuki Motor is eyeing a domestic rollout of an electric minicar by 2025 in a price range starting at 1 million yen ($8,700) after government subsidies, around half what rivals are shooting for.

The company has also planned to release an electric vehicle in India.

"I can't deny that we're lagging behind competitors, but infrastructure development and manufacturing a product that is acceptable to customers [in quality] are necessary, too," President Suzuki said.

Chinese players are going on the offensive in the global EV market by launching affordable vehicles priced around $4,500.

Looks like Suzuki is getting threatened by Chinese players at their bread and butter small car market globally. Also it hints an Indian derivative at sub 10lakhs, but 2025 is damn far.

Suzuki wants to be the Tesla of connected minicars.

With Toyota's help, the Japanese automaker to offer remote monitoring and other services by 2025.

The likes of Tesla and Toyota Motor have led the way in connecting full-size vehicles to entertainment and services through wireless networks.

Now, this trend is spreading to mini vehicles, which make up roughly 40% of the Japanese auto market. Toyota-owned Daihatsu Motor, Suzuki's main rival in this segment, is considering a similar move.

Suzuki's rollout of connected minicars starts with the updated Spacia miniwagon due out this month. It will continue through 2025, starting with main models.

Larger Suzuki vehicles will be made into connected cars after that.

Suzuki's connected cars will connect to operators in cases of accidents or breakdowns. The system will automatically guide the car to the nearest dealership or repair shop. A dealership can remotely check the car for malfunctions.

Communications devices and other core systems will be developed in-house. Some of the technology will come from Toyota, which has entered into a tie-up with Suzuki.

The company has similar plans in India, where subsidiary Maruti Suzuki holds a leading market share in passenger vehicles.

The MOU was signed on March 19, 2022 at India-Japan Economic Forum held in New Delhi, India, in the presence of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Suzuki will build a new electric vehicle production line in India. India has set itself a goal of making 30 per cent of newly-sold cars to be electric by 2030

Suzuki looks to manufacture both electric cars and electric batteries locally. This will of course mean that the EVs will be affordable

The statement makes it clear that Maruti Suzuki will target EVs in the small car segment but we keenly await more details from the carmaker about the timelines for products as also manufacturing plant for batteries.

Suzuki boss expects rocky road to sub-$15,000 electric minicar.

Suzuki agrees with Canada's Immovive to jointly develop two-speed transmissions for EVs.

Suzuki Corporation announced on January 10 that it has signed a joint development agreement with Inmotive Inc., a transmission developer, for a two-stage transmission for electric vehicles (EVs).

The joint development of two-stage transmissions for EVs may lead to an extension of cruising range through efficient motor drive, cost control by downsizing the electric drive unit, and improvement of driving performance in a wide range of driving scenarios.
