BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

Chinese carmaker BYD is said to have become the top EV seller in the world for the first time. According to a media report, BYD managed to register 3,54,000 units of EV sales globally, marking a 266% annual growth. This allowed the Chinese carmaker to overtake Tesla, whose global EV sales during the same period stood at 2,54,000 units.

A report from Counterpoint's Global Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker also states that the year-on-year sales of pure EVs increased by 61% globally, accounting for 2.18 million units in Q2 2022. Of this, BEVs accounted for 72%, while the remaining sales came from PHEVs. The report also stated that China topped the market leaderboard accounting for 1.24 million units - a 92% annual growth, followed by Europe and US.

The dip in sales of Tesla was attributed to the semiconductor shortage and the pandemic. However, the second half of 2022 is expected to deliver better results.

China's Wuling brand was ranked third in the global EV sales, with its Hongguang Mini EV becoming the best-selling model in the Chinese market. BMW secured fourth place in the global EV sales chart, thanks to its X3 and i series. Volkswagen occupied the 5th place after registering just a 1% year-on-year increase.

Well done BYD. The Chinese are seriously impressing in the EV space, and are even winning plaudits in Europe, with cars like the NIO ET7 pictured below:

I’m eagerly awaiting the launch of the Atto 3 in India, because I have a feeling it could truly shake up the EV market in our country. Go BYD!

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

BYD's growth is just astonishing. Since April 2022, they stopped selling ICE-only vehicles. All their new vehicle sales from April 2022 are either full electric (BEV) or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with each accounting for ~50% share.

Look at the below chart. These are NEV (BEV + PHEV) numbers for the last 3 years. In just 2 years, the NEV sales increased by more than 10 times. In 2018/19 majority of their sales are ICE vehicles. In just 2-3 years, they completely transformed from an ICE manufacturer to EV only manufacturer. They are aiming to deliver 2.8 lakh vehicles per month by year-end up from 1.74 lakhs in August.

Note:
Tesla is still the largest car maker for full-electric vehicles. Only half of BYD sales are full-electric with the remaining half being plug-in hybrids.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

I would expect brands such as BYD to cream the mid and smaller car segments with their design philosophy. Tesla is still a car for the economic strata in upper middle class and above. There is a volume market in the A, B, C segments and that is where BYD and other Chinese brands could score. The changes we are witnessing in the car market - rise of China, decline of the American Big 3, Europe trying to play catch up, Tesla coming from nowhere and wiping the floor with the Big ICE names - all of these reflections of global rise and declines across a much broader swathe of human endeavour and economies.

The Top 7 automobile {cars, LCVs, HCV, Buses of all sizes} in 2021 were China, USA, Japan, India, South Korea, Germany, Mexico in that order. China's output at 26 million units is equal to the next 6 combined. Dwell on that. Yesterday's big countries such as UK, France, Italy, Russia, Australia, Canada don't even feature in the top 10. In 1970 interestingly the top seven countries were USA, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Italy, Canada. China was at rank 29 and India at 31. The world is changing faster than our minds and beliefs.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

I would strongly encourage the smart readers of team-bhp to read between the lines with such an article which is riddled with falsehoods.

Counting PHEVs in any conversation about EVs is idiotic. I'd even protest the use of the letters EV in the definition of a Plug-in Hybrid. This is how an EV laggard, BMW, gets to show up on the list. Their battery EV sales are miserable.

BYD sold 180,296 full electric cars in Q2, '22. Tesla sold 254,695. In most markets, Plug-in hybrid sales are at risk from full EVs as the plug ins do not offer the benefits of EV - there is still regular maintenance & range that does not work for road trips.

At best, Plug-ins are a step toward full EV.

Norway, Europe's bellweather for EV adoption showed BEV sales of 59,300 in July vs just 7254 for Plug-ins, a gap that will only continue to expand as Europe withdraws incentives for Plug-ins as a result of real-world tests showing how polluting they really are.

In short, BYD has done a fabulous job but an 'overtake' is a bit far fetched in an effort to stick Tesla into the headline for clickbait.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

Remarkably BYD has only just began in Europe. A few weeks ago they announced they will be expanding to Germany and Sweden.

https://thedriven.io/2022/08/03/byd-...apan-entrance/

Of course, they do operate in other segments too. Electrical busses for instance, which you will find in a number of European countries.

Few consumers will have heard about BYD though. Long uphill struggle in a very competitive market with a very huge choice of cars.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

This is happened in Jun 2022 itself and they are the leader for almost 3 months now. Recently talked to my friend who worked for volvo and he mentioned that they are pretty much stuck to it as a national obsession despite the fact volvo cars is majority owned by a Chinese company and just using the brand to keep feel good factor the way Tata did JLR.

Tesla has lost almost 66% of its value in a year, as its CEO diverts his attention elsewhere.

Two-thirds of Tesla's value has vanished, more than $600 billion. All the gains in two years have come to nothing, and that in between, it achieved its historical maximum price.

Coming 2023 will be crucial for BYD, since BYD Atto 3 is getting good response in ASEAN countries and NZ, and Australia, not sure how they can manage the demand.

It is already best selling in Israel, Australia, and new Zealand within 1 or 2 months of its launch. Getting to No 1, 2, 3 in such a short timespan is a great achievement.
Youtube has certainly opened customers to reviewers and customers from other countries with no bias, and they can honestly tell if a product is good or bad.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

Full Year 200 (CY):

BYD is on track to overtake Tesla as the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles.

- BYD Sold 911,410 BEVs in 2022 and is closing in on Tesla.

- Tesla still holds the crown as the world’s largest producer of battery-electric vehicles, selling a record 1,313,851 units throughout 2022.

- Tesla’s sales ‘only’ grew by 40 percent compared to the 184 percent of BYD.

- If BYD keeps up this momentum, it has the potential to overtake Tesla as the EV leader this year.

- When factoring all of the plug-in hybrid vehicles that BYD also sold, it managed to sell 1,868,543 cars, a 214.7 percent increase from the previous year.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

The world largest car producer x the world's largest car buying economy x a Govt deeply committed to going electric x significant lithium reserves x Govt policies aimed at becoming world's number one EV maker with R&D to back it.

Is it any surprise that BYD is snapping at Tesla's heels? All of us in India don't like China's aggressive and unsettling geo-politics played at our border. But at $115 bn China is India's second largest trading partner accounting for 11% of imports plus exports of goods and services and at imports of $94 bn/~15% it is by and far our largest import partner. We cannot wish away China and its economic might and by looks of it Chinese car makers, given their tenacity and deep pockets and lack of quarterly myopia (Ford, GM?) are more likely than not to emerge as very significant players in our market.

In fact providing access to or denying access to the Indian markets is a real politik tool for us. We are likely to see more not less Chinese manufacture in India whether we like it or not.

Re: BYD becomes the world's top-selling EV brand for the first time; overtakes Tesla

1. We need Cheaper more Reliable EV's in the market, with more competition, which will benefit Indian consumers.

2. 50-60 kW LFP battery would be ideal for Indian conditions, which can minimize range anxiety.

3. Tata, BYD, MG and Hyundai seem to be only EV players so far.

I would really like to see the EV sales figures for March 2023. Companies would really compete more, and launch more products. I think CAB companies would also invest in EV's which will open perception for lot of consumers.

4. Tesla is in a tight spot with sales decreasing and will have more competition overall in China and Europe. But they are massive, with first mover advantage, and let's see how they can change their strategy to compete.

We can still catch the train on renewable energy - Solar, Wind (Off-shore and Onshore ) and make the grid more Clean. ( instead of fossil fuel Coal and Oil)

India also big advantage due to favourable climate, no zero degree weather etc. Sun light throughout the year.

The Govt. needs to perfect the art of allowing big chinese companies swallow the fruits of trading with India, but at the same time have a palm on the throat so that they know they can be choked off an important revenue stream at anytime.

We make 11% of china's trade surplus and that's a big and important number for the ccp.
