BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

China-based BYD aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in India next year. To achieve its target, the company plans to expand its product portfolio by introducing a second EV and also increase the number of retail touchpoints. If required, BYD will also expand its production capacity which currently stands at 10,000 units per annum.

BYD currently offers the e6 MPV. Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior VP, Electric Passenger Vehicle Business, BYD India, stated that the company has dispatched about 530 units to date.

BYD is gearing up to launch the Atto 3 electric SUV in the Indian market later this month. It is expected to be assembled in India from semi-knocked down kits (SKD).

Powering the Atto 3 is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that develops 201 BHP and 310 Nm, which is said to propel the car from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. It is rumoured to come with the larger 60.48 kWh battery pack, which has a maximum claimed range of 420 km (WLTP cycle).

re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

With this product, big daddy of EVs "BYD", will be testing waters with a interesting product. A SUV with 60 kWh battery ticks all the right boxes. With BYDs experience and vast battery repertoire, they are in for long haul. TATAS were fastest of the block and garnering the first mover advantage with TATA brand need to evolve, from buying kits from China. But we are seeing manufacturers de-risking with indigenous battery investments.
We are at transitory stage/ triple point, where all IC, Hybrid and EVs all co-existing, each of them has interesting propositions.
ICs with long history, familiarity, but being loathed for emissions, EVs looks enticing but anxiety about range, infrastructure but enticing for emissions, lesser parts/total cost of ownership(long term costs?)
While Hybrid proposing a middle ground. Each of them can be argued successfully.
Interesting times ahead

Re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

BYD is a really interesting entry for the Indian market. Really like their technology and products (except the Atto3's interiors).

Hope they price the Atto3 appropriately, that will define BYD's success in India. Them having the "Chinese" tag also doesn't help.

Should see how it goes, really exciting times for India's EV market. I am closely watching the developments for my next purchase.

The way the opinion of the forum is changing and the general anti-ICE sentiment of the country, I'm sure they'll achive a number twice their target.

Could very well be capacity constrained rather than demand constrained. Especially since Atto3 initially is going to be in the CKD format

BYD Seal is the new benchmark ! per reviewers

But I would not be excited for this product, India needs smaller 50 to 60 Kw Cars/SUV's like BYD Dolphin or BYD Atto 3. Though Seal base variant also has 61 kW battery as well.
Also I don't think they will launch this product in India, first priority may be Australia, NZ, Thailand and UK and other European countries.

Looks much more premium and less quirky than the Atto 3. Hopefully they bring it here too.

Re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

BYD Seal does look more premium and has a much higher WoW factor to it. Hope BYD does release it for the Indian market.

But, having said that, I dont see how BYD would succeed here with such upmarket products, this Seal would surely be 45L+ looking at Atto3 pricing.

Indian market will not welcome a chinese brand with such high pricing no matter what it offers. I feel BYD wont see the success they are hoping for in India.

This is coming from someone who loves EVs and was following the Atto3 closely, and was largely disappointed with its pricing and lack of important features.

Hope BYD proves me wrong.

Re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

I for one would take a wait and watch approach with Chinese companies. They need to build trust in Indian consumer’s mind. Electric cars with high ticket prices like 35 L on road for a BYD is way out of the league for most customers. I would buy the trusted Innova Hybrid and get space, economy and safety at this price range. Electric infrastructure will take a long time to build up and sooner or later the governments will have to levy duties on the cars.

Re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

I agree with BYD's strategy. Its W-A-Y easier to start with premium halo products, build a brand persona and a strong customer base, and then go down the ladder to more affordable offerings.

Its significantly more difficult to do it the other way round. Look at Maruti/ Suzuki's challenges with Kizashi or Hyundai's long-term challenges in getting customers to buy accomplished products like Santa Fe (or even the old Tuscon). MG is another example who started with their higher end products (Gloster, Hector or even ZS EV). Only in 2023-24 will they move to more affordable products.

BYD's engineering prowess is well known. I hope they succeed.

Re: BYD India aims to sell 15,000 electric cars in 2023

I hope they bring more 50-60 kW battery vehicles and price them reasonably in Indian market. More products, more competition, and more choices for consumers.

I think VW, or any other Auto manufacturer should aim to do that for Indian market.
Indians are ready for spend on reliable EV's only if they are affordable.( no other marketing is needed )

Did you mean to NewZealand in the second line?

Anyway, the issue with Australia pricing is they have some mandatory extra pricing for each service, which goes into a few hundred's of AU Dollars.
That is not the case in India, they are offering 6 labor free services, not sure how much money that translates to.

Also, if I remember right, Aus has a Free Trade Agreement with China, so they import with 0% tax, not the case for India though.

In any case, Atto3 should have been 2-3L cheaper, for a <35L on road.
