Volvo ‘EX30’ baby SUV could offer 273-mile range. (440 km)

Volvo expects 10 per cent of its sales in 2022 to be fully electric, with the Swedish firm looking to become purely electric by 2030.

Recent trademark request suggests Volvo’s small electric SUV could be called EX30.

Volvo’s CEO Hakan Samuelsson had previously said Volvo will move its nomenclature from the traditional codenames to proper names. However, recent trademark requests suggest the new baby SUV could be named EX30 with the ‘E’ standing for electrification, ‘X’ for SUV and ‘30’ representing the smallest model in Volvo’s range.

the new model will feature an SUV body style and be based on a pure-electric platform developed by Volvo’s owner, Chinese conglomerate Geely. Volvo itself has already teased the new car, including it in a model line-up image shown at a presentation last year, and the model is expected to play a major role in the company’s ambition to increase sales from around 800,000 units per year to 1.2 million by 2025.

Volvo has said the new ‘EX30’ SUV EV would follow the upcoming EX90, which itself will be an all-electric successor to the XC90.

Rather than use the CMA platform currently shared between Volvo and Geely, underpinning the new Volvo SUV could be Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which will also be used by Volvo’s Polestar sub-brand in the future. SEA is a modular platform, meaning it can accommodate a range of vehicle sizes, from large SUVs like the EX90 and Polestar. The smallest version (SEA-E, ‘E’ standing for “entry”), is already used on the new Smart #1 - a car that should rival Volvo’s new small SUV.

Volvo is said to be working on a small electric SUV called the EX30. The new model could be positioned below the XC40 Recharge.



According to a media report, Volvo has applied for the ‘EX30’ trademark, where ‘E’ stands for electrification and ‘X’ denotes SUV. The number ‘30’ indicates that this will be the smallest electric car in Volvo’s line-up.

The report further states that the EX30 could be based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). It’s a modular platform that can support a wide range of vehicles. It will also be used by Volvo’s Polestar sub-brand.

The most compact version of the SEA platform called the SEA-E is currently being used on the Smart #1, which is expected to rival the Volvo EX30. It is powered by a 66 kWh battery offering a range of 439 km on a single charge.

Volvo teases its entry level EV:

As a reward for those who watched the livestream until the end, Volvo apparently teased a smaller electric crossover coming in 2023.

A video was played showing an EX90 in the distance. As the camera gets closer, the video starts to ‘glitch’ and a small crossover is shown alongside its larger counterpart.

After investing in compact (C40 and XC40 Recharge) and very high-end (EX90) 100% electric niches, the Swedish manufacturer is preparing to enter the urban SUV segment for the first time under the Volvo EX30.

EX30 SUV will inherit the technology of a certain ... Smart #1. Indeed, Mercedes recently sold 50% of the capital of the microcar specialist to the Chinese giant Geely, itself owner of Volvo for several years.

Logically, the Volvo EX30 should approach 4.30 m long, appropriating Geely's SEA platform, as well as the electric motors listed in the Smart SUV catalog. Namely a version of 272 hp and 343 Nm of torque at the entry level, as well as a four-wheel drive version developing 428 hp and 543 Nm. The whole will be driven, whatever happens, by a single battery of 66 kWh which should oscillate the levels of autonomy between 400 and 440 km, depending on the versions and the choice to benefit or not from a heat pump.

Unveiling in spring 2023, before an estimated marketing at the end of the same year, the Volvo EX30 is likely to start its prices around € 40,000.

New all-electric Volvo EX30 to target MINI.

The new Volvo EX30 small SUV could feature the 68kWh battery from Smart, meaning a range of around 250 miles.

The Smart’s 68kWh battery would be enough for the EX30’s city-focused buyers and should mean a range of around 250 miles. It will also offer 150kW charging, allowing a 10-to-80 per cent refill in less than half an hour.

Volvo is likely to use more sustainable materials inside and could use Google’s Android Automotive infotainment system. This will be displayed on a large ‘floating’ tablet in the centre of the fascia. Expect to see the EX30 later this year.

My next car buy is slated for 2024 when my Volvo XC60 diesel will need to move out of Delhi-NCR. This looks ideal for my requirement for a small EV with high ground clearance. i simply adore those Volvo looks. And of course my experience with their A.S.S. has been very satisfactory. Spoke to Volvo here in Delhi-NCR. They have no information on this being introduced to India or not.

The Volvo EX30 will have a high level of safety.

In the Volvo model, all the pillars as well as the roof and the battery structure have been reinforced, thus protecting both the passenger compartment and the battery in future shocks.

A new side airbag has been developed that reduces head and chest injuries.

The model also includes security system that are called Safe Space. This includes:

-Alert when opening the door if a pedestrian, cyclist or car is coming.

– Automatic emergency braking.

-Alerts the driver, which has a special sensor, which works with powerful algorithms and is located behind the steering wheel, detects eye and face movements about 13 times per second. This way, the EX30 can try to understand if you're distracted, sleepy, or distracted, even if you haven't noticed.

Tried getting to my neighborhood Volvo dealer to check on this and he flatly denied any such product launch. Insists that the first one in the list is C40 that will be priced above the XC40 recharge and next is line is the XC90 recharge. Loved the XC 40 drive but disappointing interiors forced me to look elsewhere. Right now in favour of finalising on the ZSEV that I am getting for a 2.25 L discount. Don’t mind waiting for the EX30 if there is any hope of getting launched in India over the festival season. Anyone with birdies at Volvo - quick shoutout for help!!!
