USA: 3 lakh Tesla vehicles recalled over tail light software glitch

According to media reports, Tesla has recalled over 3 lakh units due to a software glitch, which makes the tail lights go off intermittently, increasing the risk of collision.

As per a document released by NHTSA, the glitch could affect one or both tail lights on certain Model 3 & Model Y vehicles. Reports suggest the MY2020 to MY2023 Model Y SUVs and MY2023 Model 3 sedans could be affected, with a total number in the range of around 321,628 units.

Tesla is said to have become aware of the problem last month after multiple customer complaints from outside the US market. Existing customers will be notified via a letter starting from Jan 14. However, the current models in production & those set for delivery have already started receiving updates from Nov 6. Tesla states that the issue can be resolved via a simple online software update.

Tesla is said to have received warranty claims for the issue but is not aware of any crashes or injuries caused by the software glitch.

Does a simple software update still qualify as a recall ?

Recall always sounds serious and immediately you think parts replacement.
