Suzuki charts out its EV plan; 6 models for India by 2030

Suzuki has unveiled its global strategy plan, which includes a range of pure electric cars, as well as co-branded Toyota-Suzuki models.

According to the released document, Suzuki plans to introduce its first EV in the Indian market in FY2024. The first all-electric model by Maruti will be based on the eVX concept that was showcased earlier this month at the Auto Expo 2023.

The introduction of the eVX-based EV will be just the beginning, as Maruti Suzuki plans to have a line-up of six EVs in India by FY2030. Unlike its rivals, Maruti is likely to focus on the mass market.

Suzuki’s future line-up will consist of a mix of powertrains ranging from conventional ICE, hybrid and pure-electric vehicles. The carmaker expects ICE models to account for 60% of the domestic market by the end of the decade. These will include vehicles running on CNG, biogas and ethanol mixed fuels. Hybrid will have a larger market share of 25%, while Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) will account for 15%.

India and Africa are expected to be the fastest-growing regions for the brand. The carmaker aims to double its turnover in India by the end of the decade. To achieve this, the company plans to invest Rs. 2.82 lakh crore into electrification, batteries and the construction of a battery manufacturing plant.

I am pretty sure it is NOT the Jimny, It could be the Suzuki Hustler's EV version. The Silhouette matches exactly, see below

I wonder if Suzuki is doing the mistakes parallel to what Honda did in India around 2015-17. Not moving fast enough and doing just enough.

If we take the change in BEV over last 8 yrs, then next 8 yrs are going to be very different. 60% ICE looks optimistic. Also, would they want to play the key player in a shrinking market.

They need better management consultants

It's not 60% ICE and 40% BEV. HEV is also just ICE with the smart hybrid. It's not even a plug-in hybrid. All these companies are now shocked due to the rapid adoption of EVs in Europe and China. Now, Suzuki is planning for 80% BEV in Europe and 20% HEV by 2030 in Europe. But just 2-3 years back, their European plans were even worse than this new Indian market roadmap.

I have said this a few times already in multiple EV-related threads. All these companies including Suzuki will be forced to revise roadmaps multiple times before 2030. If not, they will be losing the market share well before that. India will not be a slow adopter of EVs as these companies are hoping. As soon as a particular segment gets 1 or 2 good EV models, the EV market share will grow rapidly for that segment forcing other companies to bring the EV models.

I almost fell off my seat as this looked way too aggressive. While Tata probably has that many models already on sale, these people are just making plans still. They may want to wait till 2040 if they plan to run Suzuki into the ground like Honda.

Re: Suzuki charts out its EV plan; 6 models for India by 2030

While it makes sense from a price and positioning standpoint to come in with compact SUV EVs, the timing just seems too slow. Maruti could be giving themselves a mountain to climb if they leave things on the proposed timeline to 2030. Almost makes Mahindra's grand EV strategy look fast paced.

I do think though it's in the interests of the consumer though if Maruti can truly market mass market positioned EV's. My only guess is that they want to wait till the supply chain is more mature and the technology as well to leverage aggressive costs with suppliers. Shame nothing happened with the Wagon-R EV - feel like it's an excellent platform to base one off of, and an incredibly strong brand. Similarly a Swift EV could be huge, Maruti has enormous customer goodwill amongst their loyalists. I'm sure there's many who would gladly jump at even a first gen iteration of an EV on either the Swift or Wagon-R platform now itself, leaving those customers to wait feels like leaving money on the table from the brand.

The Hustler looks to be a Kei car, maybe they bring that in as the Nexa-fied cousin to the Spresso? They'll probably tweak the styling for India as they usually do.

Tata should go for the jugular by launching EV versions of Punch and Altroz by 2024, they will have at least two year before Maruti brings out Wagon R and Front EV's. Imagine an EV line up of Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz, Nexon, Curvv, Harrier, Sierra before Avinya based products roll out! The EV portfolio alone can sell around 10-15,000/month.

Re: Suzuki charts out its EV plan; 6 models for India by 2030

I think with an annual export volume of more than 1Lakh cars to Africa from India (Namely South Africa & Egypt) and growing, Suzuki-Maruti will defintely have enough customers for their small ICE / hybrid vehicles well beyond 2030. Africa defintely won't be ready for a EV takeover until the late 2030s with the current EV infrastructure development, so hybrids will definetely remain the top choice. I think that reasoning is what is defining their plans for the next 7 years and seems fair.

Also adding to that, if you go by the pattern, almost all Japanese automakers have been reluctant to fully embrace EVs, almost all of them are pushing on hybrids with EVs as a minor side dish.
