All future Rolls-Royce cars will be electric

All Rolls-Royce models will be exclusively battery-powered by the end of 2030, company boss Torsten Muller-Otvos confirmed to Autocar in an interview published Tuesday.

Following "Series 2" refreshes of the current V-12-powered Ghost, Phantom, and Cullinan models, the ultra-luxury automaker will switch to all-electric.

“By the end of 2030, there will be no more V-12,” Muller-Otvos told Autocar. “Series 2 cars will be V-12, brand new Rolls-Royces [will] always be electric.”

Muller-Otvos stopped short of providing a timeline for launching all-electric replacements for its range, saying the current Phantom could have an exceedingly long lifespan.

“It’s 10 years or even more,” he said. “The first Phantom was 14 years. The Phantom is 10 percent of our volume, they go for over €1 million, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go on and on [as a V12].”
The company's first electric car, the Spectre, was launched in October. It's positioned as the successor to the Phantom coupe, with classic Rolls proportions and an eye towards the future.

“People tell us would have bought Rolls-Royce Spectre with a V-12,” Muller-Otvos said. "This shows it is the right car.”

Muller-Otvos also told Autocar Rolls-Royce plans to step up its production of "very limited-run" models, as much as every other year, “as a maximum of making three or four [examples], not 15-20 as this is not then coach building."

“This is something we do by invite only with our long existing clients," he added. "You need to know them well as you work together on a long, long project.”

Re: All future Rolls-Royce cars will be electric

Come to think of it, electric power is perhaps better than petrol for luxury cars.

- Top class refinement

- No engine noise at all

- Seamless & smooth driving experience. No matter how good a torque converter, it simply cannot match the lack of gearchanges in an EV!

- The uber rich are increasingly becoming socially conscious. Zero tail-pipe emissions is a pro.

- Complex luxury cars can be unreliable. EVs are inherently simpler, hence will offer a higher level of reliability.

- Lower service costs.

- Those who buy a Rolls-Royce probably have multiple parking spots already and shouldn't have a problem installing chargers.

- The high-end EVs already offer fantastic driving range (600 km on the EQS). A Rolls-Royce will easily have 600 - 1000 km range.

Most of these high end cars are used for travel within the City/Town. Range is not an issue at all. They stand in the garage more than they move, so charging infrastructure should not be a problem. They are massive in size to show the status and battery pack need not be downsized. Smoother driving experience adds the luxury quotient. Right move in the right direction.

To be honest, these cars already feel very smooth and quiet. Improvements in this department will be very marginal after switching to electric power. However these cars have atrocious fuel efficiency and emissions, so they have to go electric in order to avoid being perceived like this:
